January 30, 2014 My life - wardrobe-wise - is now an interesting contrast between being in gym clothes, or leisure clothes, for much of my time, and then every now and then I have to look like I belong in a business meeting or a dinner party... Apparently I'm not at all alone, because many people have asked me about how to have a coherent wardrobe strategy when you dress for such a wide variety of activities. So I chose one of the very beautiful paintings suggested to me, and went to work. This painting is an innovative combination of accent colors, some interesting asymmetry, and a wide range of grey through beige and taupe neutrals. First up - the gym! Being able to use grey as a neutral is ... View the Post

Wearing Hermes Grands Fonds Silk Scarf All Year – July through December
January 14, 2014 Okay, under no circumstances would you wear this scarf with the frankly gym-like outfit for August (okay, maybe tied to your bag?), but I show this as an example of how your color preferences can permeate and inform ALL of your wardrobe choices. And yes, I would wear flat loafers with a dress, depending on how much standing/walking is going to be involved in an event. Plus I just couldn't leave out these great shoes...
After establish a core of blues and some khaki, don't forget that this scarf easily supports some accent touches of shades of red!
The best aspect of this sweater is the way it enables you to mix shades of blue with happy abandon, and ... View the Post
Wearing Hermes Petit Duc Silk Scarf All Year – July through December
January 9, 2014
This, to me, is the most compelling part of the entire project. After spending a year carefully selecting outfits that have a unifying theme (or motif, or scheme...), you begin to see a very versatile and harmonious collection of garments and accessories. A wardrobe, in fact!

Chic Sightings: Turquoise and Navy
September 5, 2013 This first outfit is what got me looking for turquoise - the pieces are all really simple, but the color combination was striking, and the proportion of the long tee shirt, the cropped cardigan, and the modestly longer shorts was both pretty and unique. Once I started to focus on looking for turquoise with navy, I saw it quite a few times!
Tee shirt – Proenza Schouler, navy cardigan – Dorothy Perkins, shorts – Jil Sander, flats- Splendid, dress – Diane von Furstenberg, cardigan – Fedeli, scarf – Hermès, pumps – Trotters

Multiple European cities: Packing with navy, khaki, red and turquoise
May 29, 2013
I get some amazing questions, with descriptions of trips that make me absolutely green with envy! One of my friends recently shared that she's going to be in Belfast, London, and Paris - what a dream trip for me...
She had isolated two jackets that she wants to take, and around which she would like to build her travel capsule wardrobe.
navy rain jacket - Jack Wills, short trench coat - Woolrich These are great choices - something waterproof is ALWAYS essential in Ireland, and it's wise to have a lightweight jacket even in the middle of the summer.
So my thinking: you need to start with a dark neutral color; navy is the obvious choice in this case. I always start with a "core ... View the Post
Closing the triangle of Hot Pink, Turquoise, and Orange; traveling again with Hermes Fleuri de Provence
May 11, 2013
There was one more color combination waiting to be addressed in the beautiful Hermes Pique Fleuri de Provence - Turquoise and Hot Pink. And that got me thinking that these three accent colors (don't forget Orange), on a base of black and white neutrals, would be a perfect wardrobe scheme for... well, for everything, forever. I see the symbol for this wardrobe like this:
And with this as your focal point, you can just combine garments and make purchases with confidence...
So one last trip, with the Hermes scarf as the initial inspiration:
