Dresses – Accessorizing Them A Little Bit Differently…

Are you getting ready to wear dresses again? Now that the weather teases us with hints of spring, I begin to ponder what dresses are lurking in my stored warm-weather clothes, and how I will wear them...

I know some women prefer to wear dresses in colder weather, because they can wear tights! Fair enough, but don't discount the comfort and versatility of a "below the knee" dress in a light fabric and a roomy cut!

Today, for no good reason, I wanted to accessorize dresses in a way that's NOT the first thing one would expect; if you can find more than 1 way to wear a dress, you'll have a good reason to wear it even MORE often. That's always smart!

"New" colors! Well, we've had this conversation at least a dozen times...

But for those of us who have a pretty good idea of what we're going to wear when the weather warms up (in the Northern Hemisphere, of course!), it's always fun to consider adding a fresh accent color to go with our signature neutrals...

Please note that I (obviously!) can't guarantee that these items will all go well together if you get them into your home. Between the variations in the colors of the items themselves, coupled with the variations in the rendition of color inherent in computers, all sorts of issues are possible! It's time to look at some "new" colors. (Yes, I never cease to be amazed by the hubris of calling a color "new"...)

But the announcement of these colors does give us a chance to think about what accent colors we prefer, and what we might want to consider. During these VERY short days (in the Northern Hemisphere!), which are very VERY cold, something to brighten up your wardrobe routine isn't crazy...

Please note, when you're shopping for socks, make absolutely sure that you're ordering what you have in mind - some socks are NOT meant to be worn with shoes! Finally! I have looked at more scarves than one might even realize EXISTED in the world... and I have made my choices!

This year, our scarves are rectangles. After spending years looking at square scarves, this is going to be an interesting change. I know that I've heard from many of you that you prefer rectangles, and find them easier to wear; I hope that these appeal to you!

Also, these are NOT silk scarves - many are silk and wool, or silk and modal. I have scarves in both of these blends, and I find them both very wearable. Don't let the wool dissuade you from considering a scarf for warm weather; it's not big, hairy, bushy, tweedy overwhelming wool...

Accessorizing a Camel, Ivory and Brown Capsule Wardrobe

Remember this lovely wardrobe from last week? I could be so tempted to just chuck everything I own and wear these colors, if I was feeling crazy and reckless...

I thought that I would try to start with 4 pairs of shoes - as I have done before. Simple flats can be worn with your skirt, or in somewhat warmer weather with pants. Loafers go with everything; leather athletic shoes are GORGEOUS and look lovely with pants, and of course short boots can be worn with everything...

Does anybody else remember back in the day when we would NEVER have worn boots that didn't come up to meet the hem of our skirt? That gap was SO off limits... Things have changed!

I'm sure we all have different experiences with this right now, but Chicago has finally gotten to cold weather. Real, honest to goodness "gloves and scarves" cold...

No need, quite yet, for waterproof boots, but that will be soon enough!

Even though the cold weather season gets shorter each year, it still arrives, and we either have to be prepared to dress for it, or prepared to stay in OUT of it...

So let's look at coats...

This first wardrobe has ZERO purple, so far. Purple is terribly hard to find - I look for it all the time, and one is more likely to find burgundy or maroon or lilac or almost anything but TRUE PURPLE.

As nifty and attractive as this wardrobe is, it's really the accessories that make it work!

You may remember from last week that when I chose 2 pink garments to add to this wardrobe, I also added these accessories:

Lovely as these are, they will NOT be enough for any normal person!

For years, I've been trying to come up with a "Master List of Accessories" that everyone should have; for years, I have not succeeded!

Life is almost back to normal; thank you SO MUCH for your patience, your kindness, your generosity, your lovely messages...

Before I jump in, I want to explain what I'm thinking with all of these white turtlenecks! But I really can't... I just kept feeling like each wardrobe needed 2 things - a bright accent color, and then a clean, bright neutral top to wear under it!

Many of us love accent colors that don't necessarily flatter us - this white turtleneck (or a white shirt with a collar) can change the impact of a color on your complexion dramatically.

yes, there's no Weekly Timeless Wardrobe this week; of course the schedule got tossed in the bin when my back started acting up! But this doesn't work out badly - the 13 weeks of Autumn clothing will nicely align with the dates that feel like Autumn to me...

When I looked at these wardrobes and pondered what I might want to add at this point, I was (as always!) drawn to a nice neutral sweater, something to wear under it sometimes, and a skirt. Of course, you can swap out the skirt for pants, the shirt for a tee shirt or lightweight layering turtleneck, and the v-neck sweater for crewneck, or cardigan, or whatever is best for you!

Are You Thinking of Autumn? A Rainbow of Sweaters…

For much of the Northern Hemisphere, the weather is still decidedly summer. But (I know I've said this before!), if you have a specific desire for your cool weather wardrobe, this is the time to look!

I think that this is especially true this year, because so many retailers are keeping inventories very small; I've been interested in items that - literally a day or 2 after my first look - will be sold out.

Adding Accessories to a Wardrobe for a LONG Trip

It's fun to look at cool weather accessories when the upper Midwest of the US is under a heat bubble...

Let's flash back to Friday, when this wardrobe, for a multi-month trip to Poland, was our focus:

We were told specifically that our heroine already has silver slip-on sneakers, and intends to pack short boots. The conversation in the Comments made it clear that she would also need warm, waterproof boots...
