Capsule wardrobes inspired by art and nature
I get LOTS of questions about what to wear with scarves - many people seem to feel that they're not wearing their scarves as often as they should. So I'm going to walk you through what I think of, when I see a scarf for which someone wants suggestions.First, the obvious way to wear a scarf - match the colors! Wearing a scarf with two differently colored garments can make it clear that this ensemble wasn't an accident.

You don't need to make teeny pictures in order to create a Project 333 capsule wardrobe for yourself; a list will do just fine... It would, of course, be possible to print these images and then "check them off" as each ensemble was worn. But the point, ultimately, is NOT to have an infinite number of different outfits, but rather to have just enough choices to be able to quit shopping and move on to more rewarding activities! And of course, 208 is NOT exhaustive... but it would get me well into July, so I just plain quit finding new combinations. I think after 6 months, I will be ready to ditch cashmere, tweed and ... I was not able to finish navy/grey last night, so I'm doing another step-by-step, this time using my own personal 333. This is a thought process that I can describe in great detail! Regarding the final number of tops, jackets, cardigans etc.: start with a general target number for your final wardrobe. I personally like to have 10 "bottoms" (i.e. skirts or pants), and I want 6 or 8 cardigans or blazers, because I wear them frequently. And I know going in that I want to include both a very basic black knit dress, and my road-warrior black velvet Eileen Fisher dress. First, I of course will start with black. I wear a lot of black, and I never get bored or tired of it. (lots of scarves ... View the Post
Last week's episode of Simply Seasonless (the denim shirt) included quite a few essential capsule wardrobe items that are ALSO pretty versatile. Today, I'm thinking of a pair of black "ankle pants", i.e. those pants that stop about 2 inches above the ankle bone. They're obvious with sandals or espadrilles, easy as pie with boots, but surprisingly fun with opaque tights and pumps or ballet flats... The key to wearing these pants successfully? Make sure they're narrow at the bottom, simply styled, and not TOO short. And yes, you're seeing some of these garments again - this is key to an efficient capsule wardrobe!
