January 31, 2014 We'll be in Paris soon, and I'm already daydreaming about what we'll do while we're there... First off, I'm trying really hard to look upon the whole flying process as positively as possible. I can sit for 8 hours without a whole lot of trouble - I've done it at work for decades, so being on an airplane isn't that big an adjustment. I can hold hands with Belovedest, relax, and listen to music or some of my favorite apps on my phone. I've recently downloaded Insight Timer, which has dozens of guided meditations that are grand for relaxing... and then I can switch to one of the many apps that is just one long soundtrack of thunderstorms. A bottle of water, some skin serum, and I'm good ... View the Post

Capsule Wardrobe Packing Outfit by Outfit: Pink, Maroon and Black, for Business Travel
January 21, 2014
The weather's cold, and you've got to go on a business trip. A SERIOUS trip...Start with a comfort garment - the favorite cardigan will make you happy, and will suggest your color scheme too! Choose a couple of outfits that ensure that you bring all of the pieces of your black suit, add a couple of jazzy red garments, and you're all set for business events. One simple dress, and everything will fit in a carry-on bag.
A black winter coat, and some gloves, will be needed here, of course:
First day in the home office - better look serious!
And you know they're going to take you out to dinner...
Second day in the office is a lot more mellow, ... View the Post
Breaking All the Usual Packing Rules: Navy and Green
January 18, 2014
Normally, I've always suggested that you pack around a great travel outfit, and then a carefully selected travel capsule wardrobe of separates, chosen separately, all working together.
But what if you decided to pack outfits? If you work from a unifying theme around which you choose all of your outfits, this is a very effective idea, which also has the benefit of helping you remember all of your important accessories!
For this example, I'm packing for someone who LOVES the combination of blue and green, and who has a variety of clothes and accessories which reflect this. The trip starts somewhere relatively cool, but will include some warmer weather activities, and a dressy dinner for a special ... View the Post
Building a Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: Woman in Hat with Pompoms and a Printed Blouse – Picasso
January 7, 2014 Many readers asked me to work with a Picasso painting, and I happily oblige. These outfits are based on beige, just as the painting is literally on a beige background. Accents of red, orange, yellow, a touch of green, and you're set for almost anything! My guiding adjectives for this project were warm, saturated, and clear, with unexpected bursts of bright against the toasty neutral.
This is a wardrobe that could see someone through much of the summer!

Building a Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: “A Mysterious Hand Leads to Another Path” by Jan Toorop
January 3, 2014
This painting is currently at the Art Institute of Chicago, as part of the Celia and David Hilliard Collection exhibit. I'm not sure if it's oil - I suspect it might be pastel - but it captivates me immediately...My impressions from this were of warmth, and simplicity - clear lines and powdery soft colors, with matte finishes.

Petrol Black and White for Uncertain Weather: A 12-Pack for Mostly Warm Weather
December 16, 2013
You probably remember that we started last Friday with a core of six garments that would be suitable for a long weekend, and then on Saturday, I expanded the capsule travel wardrobe to a 12-pack, for cooler weather. Now I'm going to do basically the same thing, only oriented toward a much warmer visit...Again, six carefully-chosen garments:
Shorts - I like white, but you could easily choose black or petrol. A great printed tee shirt that includes all three of your colors. A beautiful fluid top in your accent color, and A skirt that combines your accent color and either of your neutrals. Another top - dressier than a tee shirt - that can be worn with either of your neutrals, and A ... View the Post
Petrol, Black and White: A Twelve-Pack for Uncertain, Mostly Cool, Weather
December 14, 2013
Yesterday we packed six garments, for a short week or long weekend, and for uncertain weather.
Today, I'm assuming that we know our trip is going to be longer - up to two weeks or more, and that we know that most of our weather exposure is going to be colder. So in addition to the original six garments we packed, I'm adding six more carefully chosen items, and a few accessories. The clothing items are chosen in pairs - sort of like adding outfits, but with an eye to being sure that we can use each item in a variety of ways.
Another pair of pants is very important in cool weather, so black jeans are my first addition. With the black cardigan, it's a long line of black that can have ... View the Post

Plagued by the Muchness of Sameness
I don't imagine that it surprises you to learn that I look at literally thousands, if not tens of thousands, of garments and accessories each day. Of course I peruse most of these online while I'm building beautiful vignettes to share with you, but I look at them nonetheless. Why do I have to look at so much STUFF every day? Because the vast majority of it either (a) looks like most of the other things I've seen, or (b) looks cheap, poorly made, poorly photographed, and utterly unworthy of your attention. Often, I see clothes that qualify for both (a) and (b)... the true losers of the wardrobe world.
What can we do to combat this infinite sameness?
1. Don't give in to it. Buying basics is wise and often a ... View the Post

How to Pack for a Long Weekend: Yellow and Grey
November 27, 2013
If you can wear yellow and grey well, I must heartily encourage you to do so - these colors are always so delightful to see together. The citrine jewelry is particularly fun, and not blindingly expensive. Sunshine and clouds together...As always, if you have trouble with the links, PLEASE let me know. I'm not always sure what goes wrong, but I'm always eager to fix things!

How to Pack for a Long Weekend: Teal and Camel
November 26, 2013 Camel is such a versatile neutral! These are the camel garments that I showed a few days earlier, looking quite lovely with deep teal blue.
