She loves this – it’s actually a HUGE tapestry!
but MUSTARD?
The colors are the colors of the sports teams on which her children play! Maybe that’s why she loves it…
Except. She hates mustard! She doesn’t even like the food – no deviled eggs in her life…
But sometimes, she needs to wear a mustard sweatshirt… sigh…
Happily, she adores grey and burgundy – especially together!
Maybe it’s a football weekend. Maybe it’s a soccer tournament weekend…
Or just a visit to see her kids! Whatever, she’s got a plan…
This is what she takes with her – sometimes she switches her outfits around, but this is always her travel capsule wardrobe:
What can you do with 8 garments? Quite a few things, actually. She is careful to never wear mustard without something under it, and maybe also a scarf to keep that most unflattering shade away from her face…
Do you ever find yourself in a situation where you can’t avoid wearing a color that you don’t like? It seems to me that any time I volunteer for something that involves a free tee shirt, the color is shockingly ugly on me…
Not the most important thing though, right?
love,
Janice

I just bought a plain long sleeve tee in this color and could not figure what to wear it with. Thanks for the ideas.

Thank you for this feature! I do not wear yellows but my oldest child attends a college whose colors are a yellow tartan. The college bookstore is full of mustard colored clothing. I can pull off the burgundy and grey (her former high school colors, incidentally!) so I’m anxious to try this combo soon!

Although these aren’t colors I would wear, I quite like everything put together. I absolutely agree with the concept of wearing a complimentary color near the face if you find yourself “required” to wear a not so hot color on the top. I have a love/hate relationship with mustard and yellow. While I don’t think they are great colors for me, they can look so great in combination with colors I do wear.

You said you what. I worked at the dentist for decades ~ completely white. For years afterward, I rarely wore white.
That’s probably why I love it colorful now. I really like the colors in this post and go well with a lot of neutrals.

Well, I struggle with the solid black the is the standard attire for choral groups! Head to toe black is not my friend. I keep a capsule of items that I can press into service based on the formality of the event, but I find that I keep buying different “options” because the ones I have are never satisfactory.
My DH is a big fan of celebrating holidays by wearing the “right” colors: red for Christmas, green for St. Paddy’s Day, orange at Halloween, etc. I can substitute burgundy for red, forest or chartreuse for green (I have an irrational love for chartreuse), and so on, but the convo always circles back to “don’t you have anything just RED?” Nope, lol!

What a cozy, gorgeous wardrobe! That tunic top has me MIGHTY tempted. It comes in three more colours and it’s on sale today.
I stumbled into wearing a tricky colour below the waist, away from my face. I can’t wear mustard near my face but it plays well with so many colours so I made a skirt in a mustard knit fabric. It was terrific and I got a lot of wear out of it.

School colors black and gold. I have gold jeans and gold cords that way I can put black on top and add a scarf if need be.

Black, orange, yellow, olive, beige, camel, and pure white (only in summer or with makeup). Enough said.

However, I love the grey and burgundy and would wear the club badge instead.

Love your style! Thank you for pulling together fasionable looks from a variety of retailers that do not break the bank!

Yup! Navy instead of burgundy, and I can pack right now….I like this very much.

Oooh, I love this. Even the mustard. Mustard doesn’t look great on me, but a few pieces have wandered into my wardrobe and I make them work. My favourite is a bright mustard down jacket that I wear on the weekends in the winter. I LOVE it and the colour is called ‘Burnt Honey’ which I think is just wonderful.

Love the gray, white and burgundy. Hope I’m never in a situation where I’m asked to wear a yellow or mustard shirt. I would substitute pink or blue for the yellow. This is a great capsule Janice. ❤️

Burgundy/maroon and pink are a lovely combination – one of my favorites! (first seen (for me) here on TVF).
Great versatile long-weekend wardrobe. I love the idea of a packed bag for weekend adventures, I think a few past heroines used to do this. I recall one who would leave Friday after work, take the train, get off at a random spot, explore the town for the weekend, come back to work Monday morning; every weekend for a season; and then at the end I think she bought her retirement house in one of the towns? This is on my dream list of things to be able to do.
Thanks for a great capsule Janice!

Fooled me! Haha. I took my first look at these colours and thought, “oh no, not for me”……..AND THEN…….wow, what a perfectly gorgeous capsule wardrobe. Nope, I don’t wear these colours but they look terrific. The rich burgundy pieces and accessories, with the cozy and classic grey pieces and clean white tops (one dressy, one casual, but both practical). One final take away for me: bring one pair of sturdy casual boots and one pair of dressier (but still very practical) boots. Great inspiration in a small collection. Thank you Janice.

And here we have another example of the versatility of grey!
The capsule is perfect, especially these kinds of scarves…the ones which add degrees of warm protection in cooling weather. The versatility of a great pull on knit pant? Priceless! 😻😻😻
Oh, and now you’ve got me craving deviled eggs.

Regarding mustard. Not a great color for me, but I found some fabric in a cool mustard and sewed a tunic. Works so nicely with my fall scarves and a cute Christmas scarf in non traditional colors. So I guess it’s like a lot of other colors and can flip warm or cool depending on the under tone. But if I had auburn hair it would be so much better looking on me!
And yellow? I gathered a French 5. Not a great color for me either but the tones are buttery rather than lemony and with white stripe or background, or mottled texture, so I think it’s working okay. And just such a cheery color and I feel happy wearing the tops so, it’s a win for me.
I could put this capsule together from my closet just substituting navy for burgundy! And my mustard tunic would fit right in!

That mustard color makes my skin crawl. Takes me right make to middle school and the hideous sweater I had to wear for band. No way I wear mustard. Doesn’t the team have a second color she could wear instead?
Shrebee says
Janice,
Yes, I happily wear mustard tops in Autumn, with bottoms in camel, brown, olive green , or navy , but not denim blue. I keep trying to wear gray, but it’s just too cool and unflattering on me, despite my loving the idea of being able to use it as one of my neutrals .
My high school colors — maroon and gold , which looked more like mustard .
April says
Shrebee: maroon and gold were my high school colors too!

I have navy and gold/yellow for all my kids school colors and mine! (I teach) so I do have to wear mustard and I usually do it with a cardigan. I had a mustard shirt but that close to my face just didn’t work. But the cardigan seems to frame all the navy and it looks really nice on me. I use brown leather accessories (belt, shoes) and it works.

I would be good with the white and mustard near my face, but the grey and burgundy…would be as far from my face as possible. Interesting how few like mustard, but so many like burgundy and grey. I wonder if those who like it also look good in it and those who don’t may have school associations?
Jazz says
What colours would you substitute the mustard with Janice?
