She knew that this would be just right for the upcoming cool weather…
So many of the colors were comfortable for her from her existing wardrobe, and the colors that she doesn’t have, she’s willing to buy. What a palette!
She takes everything out of her closet and start carefully choosing what’s going back in! Simplicity is what she’s working toward…
Starting with the core navy pieces she knows she will want to wear all the time:
She decides to order some mustard pieces; she’s never worn this shade of yellow, but when she daydreams about wearing it, she finds it very appealing!
She loves to wear pink and navy together – this is a chance to include her favorite tee shirt! And at this point, she realizes that she’s better start choosing some pants and skirts, as well as accent tops.
She loves soft teal – especially her accessories!
When she found that her favorite navy velvet skirt was ALSO available in forest green, she didn’t hesitate! These are the kinds of purchases that make life so much easier.
She has everything ready to be hung back in the closet – some lovely wooden hangers will make all of this look like a display in a store…
It’s something that all true heroines do – mull over their various outfit possibilities before they put their capsule wardrobe away. It’s wise – you can spot garments you’re missing, or accessories that could make a world of difference in your days.
So many colors! So many possibilities!
love,
Janice
p.s. Five years ago, our heroine was awarded part of a class action settlement, which she promptly spent on clothes to wear to Paris! We start with a scarf from The Met Store, and build a wardrobe in navy and pastels…

Just WOW. So yesterday I was feeling all about the neutrals, and then you come up with this, and now I am back to being all about the colors! Maybe not these specific colors as I don’t wear pink, but that’s easily switched out with something I do wear. The lion scarf is amazing. What a fabulous way to start my day. Love love love the painting. You never cease to amaze me with your creativity. Thank you!

That soft teal makes my heart sing!

Absolutely gorgeous! I would wear these colours in a heartbeat- but would keep the mustard for a skirt and accessories as I can’t wear it near my face.
I would happily make outfits from some of the accent coloured items (eg mix pink or mustard with teal) and give the dark items a break once in a while.

Beautiful! Love having 4 accent colors, and WHAT colors!!! for me personally, I’d increase the intensity of the pink and teal. I love posts with multiple accent colors – it fits better with helping me create cohesion from my magpie closet. And i agree with Wendy re: all accent outfits – imagine the mustard sweater with the green skirt! lovely.
Thanks Janice!

and another fantastic post from Janice.
This also works for me warm color type, I have almost all the pieces (or something similar) in the colors in the closet. …and a pair of green shoes.
I would even wear the teal with green. If that’s too much for you, white instead of pink. There are so many possible combinations.
Best regards
Maria

Apart from pink which I never wear, I love everything here. Those teal pants are so elegant; maybe not for me unfortunately as I am very short but I am sure look stunning on someone taller.
It is perhaps just as well I am in Europe and buying clothes and accessories from the US/UK so difficult these days, otherwise I would be doing some serious shopping this month! However, your posts are so inspirational, and you have really helped me sort out my clothes choices since I retired and lost the plot completely! Thank you so much.

Stunning though I don’t wear mustard. I love the soft teal and the pink. In fact the model wearing the soft teal trousers is wearing a forest green polo neck which is an unusual combination that works. The velvet skirts are casual luxury – a smart casual alternative to velvet jeans.
I’m laying out clothes for an upcoming five day trip. It’s tricky to know what to wear. The weather forecast is not great having just had a heatwave – 30-50% showers with sunny intervals and temperatures of 19-20C. I need a variety of sleeve lengths and knitwear. Indoors at the moment, I’m wearing a tee shirt but feeling a tad chilly. I’m going to experiment with a wardrobe of mainly blues and greys which I’ve not done before. Navy, teal blue, slate blue, turquoise and light blue. However, part of me still wants to add in a pink jumper just in case I can’t get through five days with a limited colour palette! Looking at my available blue tops, one is slate blue with pink dots, so a pink jumper is justified, at least. Having navy and grey trousers allows me to just take two pairs of walking shoes – navy and grey plus walking boots. I have a navy wax jacket and a navy pac-a-mac with pink butterflies. I’m taking a pair of silky trousers. The pink jumper has a sheen to it so with the silky trousers could do for evening wear. Do I take a pair of flats to wear in the evening? Should I take a maxi skirt which then means taking tights? Should take a smart jacket? Experience tells me that the smart wear will remain unworn but it is an area that we’ve not visited before so don’t know what our activities will be or the pubs/restaurants are available. Decisions, decisions…

Please let us know how your packing worked and if you enjoyed the blue and grey scheme. I hope you have a wonderful time away!

I’d add the pink jumper – I need at least one piece to break the color monotony, and you have a smattering of pink in the pieces you want to pack anyhow. Plus pink goes great with gray and blue. Personally, my ankle boots are flat and pointy-ish toed, so feel formal enough to me with silky pants that I dont need flats in the evening (they are grey suede, i feel like they go with everything). I’m not sure how you feel about your walking boots covered by the trousers. Jacket – I’d pass for a pretty scarf that can cover most of my top depending on how I wear it (same thing a Jacket does) – that adds a more smart vibe. Interested to know how it goes for you! Good luck!

Love this! These are almost my colors!! My pinks range from rose to berry to burgandy, with just a pop of the mustard in my cardigan as it doesn’t suit my color near my face. But I use cognac brown shoes and belts and it works. I also use teal to turquoise and a sagey green to forest green. Navy and denim with white are my neutrals. I love these colors!!
Sally in St Paul says
First off, I have to say: 4 coordinating dark green pieces from 4 different brands?! And with a Jesse Zhao scarf to top it off? My stars. So impressive and gorgeous! I actually like all of the groupings, and they combine for such an interesting wardrobe. The lion scarf is a perfect choice for bringing these colors together. I agree with other commenters that combining some of the accent colors would make some great outfits. Pink + teal or dark green is a very easy/wearable combination, for example.
I personally would have to substitute something for the mustard grouping, but I can readily see a lighter yellow, a dark pink/magenta, soft white/ivory, or some mixture thereof standing in for the mustard. Realistically, the solid mustard top would turn into a print top in my capsule. Because scarves are in such heavy rotation for fall/winter, I do wear more solid pieces in colder weather, but I would still want a second print top – one that still looks like a print when worn under a cardigan. (Not to knock the 3-color striped top, which is cute as can be, and which I would immediately wear with the navy chinos and leather sneakers for an ultra-simple but very fun casual outfit.)
The different cuts of pants/skirts in this capsule brings me back to the previous discussion about proportions and silhouettes. The teal sweater + pants from Paisie are gorgeous together, and feel quite suitable for a tall skinny person who enjoys the slouchy look, but I do wonder how that would translate on those of us with a larger weight-to-height ratio. Then as I consider how I’d mix the pants in with other items, I am unsure about them. They are quite on-trend and no doubt would work with some things in the capsule, but I wonder about devoting 20% of my skirts/pants allotment to a silhouette that is so different from the others.
I’m realizing that I personally like variety of colors/prints but not so much variety of silhouettes. Of course I have *some* variation in the silhouettes, but not very much when it comes down to it, even though I have a large wardrobe.

Those 4 green garments give you some idea of how much time I spend putting these wardrobes together!

Love the callback to the proportions/silhouette discussion the other day. The variety of bottoms (pants with different drape and length and cut; plus the skirts although the cut/length is the same on them) is a great example of how I would (theoretically) handle a single neutral. If I wear the same navy as my core, I feel like I’m wearing the same thing every day (doesn’t help that I cant really wear skirts to work) – pants and a colored top + accent (jewelry, scarf, cardi, whatever combination thereof). And to me, it feels BORING. But having a few different silhouettes/ fabrics helps! The hard part is keeping variety while avoiding the ones that dont make you feel pretty. For me, I’ve managed ankle pants in the summer, and bootcuts and wide leg all year round. I need the “stiffer” or more structured fabric to keep the tummy from sploshing around, but with a wide leg pant i can still get that “swooshy” feeling.
As always, fun to read your insights!

could you remind me, again, how you create your color pallettes? I LOVE this one, and have a version planned for fall (when it gets here).
Janice says
I use charts in PowerPoint! Choose the numbers to represent the relative size of each wedge, and then fill in the colors. Once you know how to do it, you can put it on your resume!

well, i know what i’m doing during my next lunch break.
Looking at your posts is always the most beautiful part of my day.

Just fabulous!! Like many have said the mustard is a no go anywhere near my face but boy does this wardrobe look appealing. Again, just fabulous!

Reporting back – interesting since you’re featuring the Jessie Zhao Verdant Leopard scarf again. I loved it and bought it, especially loved that it was reversible to greys, which I love.
Unfortunately, the green is a bright bright Kelly green, not the muted green that it was shown as on the Wolf and Badger website nor the green that you are showing today. I can’t wear Kelly green (it’s warm, I’m cool) and it doesn’t match the dark green Boden sweater that you also showed that I also purchased to go with. So disappointed, and will return the Boden sweater too since I bought them to wear together.
Loral Werner says
This is fantastic. I love the other colors to go with all of my navy core pieces. I have a warm complexion and these additional colors really give me something to work with.
Ange says
I love the Boden skirts! They took a silhouette that’s typically a denim skirt and elevated it by using velvet. It’s also available in corduroy. I would definitely pair the mustard vest with either skirt and one of the pink tops.
Forest green, deep teal, soft pink, and mustard are my favorite accent colors. I struggle with a neutral though. While the navy looks good with these colors, I’m just not a fan for myself. I’ve been adding deep brown (when I can find it) as a neutral. If olive can be considered a neutral, what about forest green?
Thanks for your work in putting these wardrobes together!

I have this dark green as a neutral and love it…also own green shoes.
My husband brought me a green leather bag from Spain over the weekend.
my heart jumps.

I would totally see forest green as a neutral in a wardrobe. Just think of…well…a forest! All that green as the background for every color found in nature is just stunning.
Kari says
Oh I love this. Well, not the pink…because like Sheila, I do not wear pink. But that just means more gold and forest items. Is this enough for 3 months? That seems to be my stumbling point. I try to count out items and come out thinking that I would run out of tops…and hate everything because of wearing too often.
Ally says
Orange, fuchsia/berry, turquoise or a bright teal and yellow as my accents with black and navy as as my neutral! Done! I need more clarity and intensity in my accents but there is some decent contrast here which I appreciate.

I too am enjoying the different silhouettes of the bottom pieces. Love those green pants. At 5’4”, I am experimenting with a bit of drape( a la Athleta) in pants
, pairing with a shorter pullover give less bulk at my middle. Lovely colors, thank you.

Janice, I just found you today – WOW. Pinterest popped up your Spirit of Autumn capsule and I fell in love. So classic, I couldn’t believe it was from 2016! I can already tell that I will be spending a lot of time with your blog. :) This capsule from Ruffled Autumn clouds is gorgeous. I was recently color draped as an Autumn so I may be copying this one. Personally, I will use the greens already in my wardrobe as a base and pull a warmer navy as an accent. How exciting to have an Autumn colored capsule that doesn’t feature brown (not that I don’t love brown…). I can tell this blog is a labor of love for you. thank you for sharing!

Thanks for finding me! Yes, it’s love, but I also earn commissions when someone purchases an item through my links! (I’m not entirely crazy!) I hope you find lots of useful and fun things here – one thing to look for is the “Six Paintings, 12 Months” wardrobes – one of those wardrobes is ALL SHADES OF BROWN. No other colors. It’s a marvel!

Janice

I love this post. It’s so fun seeing how creative you can be with the colors! I personally can’t wear any shade of yellow, being very cool complicated, but if we swapped that out for either some lovely medium blue or more pink, I would wear this in a heartbeat. The real and emerald are gorgeous! And I could totally see wearing that teal column with the pink cardigan.
Thank you for being such an inspiration!

I would never in a million years 1) think of using art to come up with color schemes (I am new to this!); and 2) think that the contrasting colors of this current artwork would produce harmonious outfits but by gosh, it works! This is amazing!
