College-Bound!
Not her! Oh, not anymore… but it’s time to move offspring into the dorm – a long-ish drive, and some time sitting by the car while the young people move their stuff!
The best part of this trip is meeting up with the parents of other students; she’s become close friends with 3 other women who make the same trip every year!
They’ve gotten in the habit of staying over in town for a couple of days whenever they make this trip – they are close to their kids if they find that something has been forgotten! (that’s their excuse…)
But it also gives the 4 of them time to catch up, do a bit of sightseeing (college towns always have cool museums, fun coffee shops, and lots of interesting little stores!). If you’ve gone to the trouble of packing a bag and driving a while, why NOT hang around with your friends?
It doesn’t take a lot of luggage to be able to take a weekend off…
She is eager to see her friends – a little bit of her is eager to see what they will be wearing!
love,
Janice
p.s. Four years ago, we got back in touch with one of my favorite heroines, and one of my very simple color palettes!

I always look forward to your posts – its so delightful to see the colour combinations that you come up with.
Well done – something artistic and not just ” show-off”!

This wardrobe is really appealing. I especially like the scarf.
Sheila says
wow. Although the colors are not “mine” I really love all the individual pieces. Wonderful wardrobe. I worked this weekend on getting my 21 pieces picked out for September. Here’s hoping we have a “normal” year weather wise and not something freaky! Thank you Janice. I may look at these and see what alternative colors there are. The navy pieces I can probably shop my closet!

i love this wardrobe and will be doing this shortly, however this wardrobe would be awesome in the fall, it would be way too warm for moving college kids pretty much most anywhere in the US, but I can dream of the cooler temps.

I had to laugh at “Burnt Orange”. It’s a huge color for Texas folks if you root for The Longhorns.(notice it’s almost the exact color of a football) I have a daughter-in-law who certainly does, and she has one of her three boys on board. My son-in-law however is an Aggie so no way does that color come into his house in any form. I remember a TVF way back where fall colors and college teams were mentioned. Navy and Gold while a nice look together are NEVER worn in our house! Black and Gold is another story.

To me this looked like college team colors, also! I remember that post — the heroine wanted to root for the team but not wear jerseys or anything too blatant. As my son has joined his middle school football team that thankfully has the same colors as the high school team, I’ve thought about that post a lot – how to choose a few school spirit items that will also fit in off campus. This flannel looks so warm and subtle I looked it up — not my colors but very inspirational!

Gorgeous! I love the combination of the rust, burnt orange and purple in that scarf and how it works out to a beautiful 6 pack.

I am currently on this trip. Two weeks across the US with our family to take my daughter to college. Every where we will be is going to be hot so I have linen pants and tees and tanks. I used the 4 by 4 packing method.

A fascinating color palette, and Benetton really came through with that burnt orange color. Will be interesting to see if this capsule is expanded to bring in the other colors in the palette!
Lizette says
Yes, I’d like to see some purple.
Rex says
Just a suspicion, but from the phrasing, this is part 1 of 4 of a 4 friends post – one with each of the accents in the scarf.
Janice says
Clever…

Sally in St Paul says
Ah, of course…well spotted, Rex!

It’s a pretty scarf and I like the capsule. As a light ash blond, that burnt orange would make me look ill. I’m curious ladies, can anyone out there wear it?
Beth T says
Brunettes who wear autumnal colours, though maybe not navy.
Dee says
I think people with darker skin, hair, and eyes, from Mediterranean coloring to African-American shades, look AMAZING in these warm colors.

I enjoyed the look back. Thank you for all the creativity you put into each heroine and her story.

This scarf is so rich in colour and identity. Our heroine today has a clear sense of her identity as a mature and elegant woman. I look at my wardrobe, which is in much better shape, thanks to you, and I see several identities – the romantic, igenue, gamine, classic. I’m still not sure which is the real me. My colours are all cohesive but the styles aren’t. Purple and burgundy along with navy, grey and brown are the backbone of my autumn/winter wardrobe.
This scarf has several possible colourways. You’ve picked out rust and teamed it with navy, though my brunette daughter wears rust with black. There is also purple, burgundy and an odd shade of pink. Is this a hint that you might revisit this scarf as the basis of wardrobes for her other three friends. I hope so but apart from being the mothers of four college students what else distinguishes them?

Beth T mentions something interesting…that the heroine has a defined identity, but that she personally has a mix in her closet. That ties into some books that I’m dying to read about dress codes and fashion as communication and self identity. I have a mix between modern to blend or for practical reasons and a soft vintage that feels more real to my identity. Perhaps that may be why I do not see a way to reduce my closet much more until I have worn out items that are good still but just not especially appealing. Can a capsule encompass more than one identity style sucessfully or to work correctly must it be one style only? I’m curious what others think about blending identity styles in the capsule. Beth thank you for your comment…it has made me take a new look at my wardrobe. As always to Janice my thanks for the inspiration post.

Another wardrobe idea would be for a train trip.
The Ghan is actually a rather fabulous train trip through the centre of Australia. You can see the rail tracks depicted in various segments of the scarf.
Although having traveled on Amtrak … the wardrobe would have to be rather small.
We tend to call the Burn Orange colour Ochre. There are many shades of Ochre depending on where in Australia you are and the clay/dirt/rock used as pigment
Janice says
I should have done more research on the scarf before I started working – a train trip would be great fun!
