Let’s GO!!!
First up is black…
Last week we started with 5 essential garments (well, essential for most of us!):
As soon as I saw this “rust red” – I know that this was where I wanted to start! To me, this color is very close to the color of warmly brown leather… maybe brown earrings would have made sense here but I didn’t see any that impressed me, so I opted for these timeless black ones!
These 6 additions to the original 5 garments give you something that can legitimately be called a wardrobe! It’s not huge, but for a long weekend, this would serve you well:
You’ve now got at least a few outfits…
Next is our soft, warmly-colored wardrobe:
Since I couldn’t find 5 beige garments, I opted to grab some ivory while it was available:
One does not HAVE to add a twin-set to this wardrobe – these 2 garments are as far apart in color as you can get!
A wardrobe that started out softly muted suddenly has some brightness!
Now, this heroine can dress in subtle beige and ivory, or add some lovely punches of color:
Time for some grey!
Doesn’t the texture of this cardigan really stand out?
This smoky lavender is perfect with grey; I looked at grey leather goods, but they never looked quite right to me!
I could cheerfully take off for a long weekend with this in my bag!
Nobody is going to be bowled over by the variety in your wardrobe during this wee trip, but is that really important?
As always, I found olive difficult; I can see that I may add mauve to the accent colors, and change that deep teal to a range of shades from dark teal to the lighter eggshell blue…
Still, one could do worse than these 5 garments for going somewhere for a couple of nights…
Adding gold and teal to this wardrobe makes a world of difference!
Unexpected, but it works….
Here again, a heroine could wear muted colors or accent with strong brights; some of us like having this kind of options in our wardrobe.
Navy and pastels – how nice is this!
Here again, a little bit of texture makes a big difference:
Pink is classic with navy…
And here again, I’ve chosen black leather goods rather than navy because I just wasn’t seeing navy shoes that impressed me. Your luck may be better!
If you like this color “pink gale,” click here and see what all is available…
This is another wardrobe that could get me out the door and down the street…
Nobody will be surprised by what you wear, but you will look lovely no matter how you combine these pieces:
Here again, I’m going to expand my accent colors to include a wider range of yellow and turquoise; it’s difficult to be really stubborn about your color choices unless you have a LOT of time and energy to look at tons of things!
I spend hours looking for a lot of things here on The Vivienne Files, and I have to conclude (sometimes!) that things I’d like to find just don’t exist at a reasonable price, and in a reasonable range of sizes…
These brown pieces, with the simple white tee shirt and the gorgeous scarf, would go a long way…
Since I missed a brown tee shirt at the beginning of this wardrobe, I’ve chosen to add one now, along with the perfect gold cardigan, and ginko leaf earrings!
Yet again, our heroine has the choice of an all-brown outfit accented with her scarf, or of brown with strong gold!
How are you feeling about our various wardrobes so far? I have to confess that I sort of like all SIX of them!
love,
Janice
p.s. I have a question – how often do you wear a garment (or multiple pieces) with a sports team logo on it? Recently, I’ve been inundated with sports stuff every time I search for almost anything…
I own an Ireland rugby jersey, which I’ve worn in the US, Canada, France, and Ireland to national matches. Maybe once a year I dig it out and wear it when we’re watching an Ireland match on TV. But it’s far from a core part of my wardrobe. Am I missing something?
p.p.s. NINE years ago, I shared what is probably the best advice I’ve ever given…
LesleyC says
Lovely choices as always. This inspires me to build my own winter wardrobe around my scarf collection.
My husband rotates through a selection of international rugby jerseys as casual wear and my son has several Man City shirts. My daughter and I are avid sport enthusiasts but we have no desire to wear logos of any kind on our clothes.
lena says
I used to feel I had to wear sports team logo garments when attending a game but never felt comfortable wearing those garments at any other time. When it was time to replace those logo garments I opted instead to purchase items in team colors: an accent tee (orange) and a neutral fleece topper (navy). I also picked up an accent color scarf, earrings, and gloves. I keep all the accent color items together in a small packing cube stored in my closet and pull them out only when headed to a game or game-watching party as orange is not one of my preferred accent colors. The neutral topper is in my regular rotation and has been a wise purchase as I reach for it quite often. Always feel like I’m properly supporting my local sports team while dressing comfortably and confidently.
LD Siess says
Lena, that’s so smart colors instead of logo so! I’m going to do the same, what a relief to not have to wear logos (I feel awkward in them) but still be part of the team!
LD Siess says
Ugh forgive my *awkward* typing
Lesley C says
I have to suppress a smile.Perhaps the reason my husband has to wear the branded jersey is because he doesn’t pay attention to team colours. He once turned up to our son’s school
Hockey game wearing a
Maroon sweater – he ended up sitting with the welcoming crowd of parents from the opposition while I sat with the familiar parents dressed in Blue!
A says
I love the stored together in a packing cube idea! I could use this for other seasonal or event specific items. I am thinking holiday wear for one. Thanks Lena!
Rebecca says
I look forward to seeing where you take these wardrobes.
In response to your question, I wear my team’s hockey jersey about once a year when we go to see a game. It is most definitely not a regular part of my wardrobe. I have no other ‘sport team’ related logo t-shirts, but I do have 3 other logo/graphic t-shirts that are a part of my regular wardrobe, so I’m not opposed to them entirely.
Megan M says
I have an Omaha Lancers (USHL) jacket and wore it to a San Jose Sharks (NHL). That bright Lancers orange didn’t fit in with the blue and grey but I made one hockey mom’s night–her son played for the Lancers and was so surprised to see an Omaha jacket on the west coast.
Sheila says
I have one sports logo shirt, which I think I bought to participate in a “spirit week” activity. Sometimes I wear it at home – I also have two logo shirts from my son’s Air Force Squadron and Flight. Again, I wear those at home – not to work.
Cindy says
I have one scarf to wear to basketball games with the team logo on it. Since it is in 2 of my worst colors, gold and black, it just made it to the Goodwill bag. I just ordered (has not arrived yet) a tee shirt as a fund raiser for my son’s Marine Corp Squadron and Flight. Will probably wear it to walk in.
Sandy says
These are great additions. I feel I can start the project with a basic Plan and have it work. I still love the black and rust, especially the leather goods. A change from black and richer and warmer looking. The addition of black shoes and bag for the navy and grey is a solution to a problem I often face. Sometimes I think navy is more trouble than it’s worth, lol. I’m not sure about the teal and olive. I think I would have to see it in person to like it. The yellow works well in that set. All in all this is a very good start to the year’s work.
Sally in St Paul says
It’s totally idiosyncratic but the navy with black shoes looks off to me…and I have to assume it’s a learned response because I do not feel the same about a men’s navy suit + black shoes! But grey with the black shoes looks great. Olive + teal seem like they should work but I can’t decide yet what I think of it. I will be watching that wardrobe with interest!
Beth T says
Most navy shoes and boots aren’t dark enough to wear with navy – that looks ‘off’ too. So black it is.
Sally in St Paul says
I think I like somewhat lighter navy colors and often treat them as a form of blue, so wearing multiple versions of navy together feels fine to me because it’s just various values of blue. But for the very dark navy that a person is treating as a true neutral, I can see that black could be closer to the dark navy than a light navy is, and since the classic approach is a darker shoe to ground the outfit, that black could feel like a better choice, particularly to the extent one has a classic or more formal-feeling style. Certainly the dark navy men’s suit + black shoes fits that mold. I don’t own/wear straight up business suits and like to combine various blues in my more eclectic outfits, so a blue or navy shoe is my choice.
Barb says
These are coming together nicely and it’s exciting to think about the months ahead! You can really see how something with texture livens up a fairly plain wardrobe – note to self! The olive and teal kind of sets my teeth on edge, I’m not really sure why. The gingko wardrobe is not something I could ever wear but that scarf makes me swoon every time it pops up. It’s like spring captured in a rectangle!
Jackie Katz says
I love all the wardrobes and your approach this year starting with a basic core instead of a new outfit each month. I am especially excited by the Ruskin’s Meadow wardrobe, since I am transitioning from black to olive as my dark neutral and want to keep teal as my main accent color.
I dislike wearing logos on clothing and rarely go to sporting events. When I do go to an event, I wear clothing in my team’s colors.
V says
Each scarf wardrobe makes me rethink the items already in my closet, even the scarves not anywhere near the palette wear.
I thought I preferred a single column of color with an accent of jewelry or a scarf but in reality I realized I reach for a pop of color in a sweater more often than not. Thanks for pushing the conversation I have in my head.
I don’t own any sport logo clothing, except for a tee shirt from my daughter’s high school track team and she’d turning 32 this month, but if I am with fans, they always seem to have something to share to get in the spirit.
Beth T says
I’m with you on coloured jumpers and tops as a go to. Currently wearing a fuschia pink cowl neck jumper with purple trousers. Yesterday, it was with navy trousers and I could wear dark grey too. The top underneath is fuschia pink but I could wear navy or grey or purple. Lots of variety.
Beth T says
The early addition of accent colours is a good idea. A couple of years ago, I was experimenting with green teal and pink so I’m looking forward to seeing how the Sampler Scarf will develop. The saturation and tone of tyec pink/lilac and green accents of the Chrysanthemum and Hydrangea scarves will have to vary enough not to resemble each other too closely – tricky. It’s interesting that you are already considering changing the accent colours or making them flow from dark to light or bright to muted in some of the wardrobes. You might also consider the brown in the Ginko scarf as I see it more as a rust, which might be easier to find in warmer weather. Will the Tree of Life wardrobe look too heavy in warmer weather? No doubt you will weave your magic as always.
I’ve always eschewed logos and collegiate wear. I don’t support particular sports teams, so dont attend matches nor would I wear garments with the England or UK flags emblazoned on them, though I might possibly wear a brooch. I follow Lena’s idea of wearing garments in the appropriate colours which can also be worn at other times. However, if someone paid for me to go to Wimbledon, Lords or Wembley, I would certainly wave a flag!
Linda T says
I really like the approach you’re using this year. It just feels more complete and a truer way of building a wardrobe.
As to team logos on clothes, I’m a no. It feels like something more suited to school aged people to me. I love seeing a stand full of fans in their gear but would opt for the colours without the logos for myself.
Sandi says
I used to have a ton of team-logo sweatshirts, etc. I have exchanged them for articles in the team colors, which are much more versatile.
I am doing a new challenge (for me) this year: “Nothing New in ’22”. I love your advice from 9 years ago!
Sandy says
Ooh, I might try that idea, as my shopping was a bit over done in 21…..
Beth T says
I’m trying to do – Nothing New in ’22. I managed to walk into a clothes shop yesterday and come out with nothing. What are your criteria? Is this idea not buying brand new but you can buy pre-loaded second hand? Is this just clothes etc or extended to your home as well?
Megan says
My Ginkgo scarf arrived & I love it! I’m not surprised that not everyone likes Teal & Olive, but it works for me as a faded redhead/strawberry blonde. I have a lot of Teal/Turquoise, Olive, Mustard/Gold/Yellow, & Rust/Cognac/Brown that I’ll be happily wearing with this,Gingko scarf!
ruth m says
No to logos, but I make an exception for baseball caps. Sometimes they are a good casual style, and they look somehow wrong WITHOUT some type of logo.
I’m new to the blog…thank you, Janice! Love your concrete yet flexible advice.

Lovely ensembles, Janice. I like the black and “rust.” I wear team logo tshirt on game days, even if we are watching it from our couch. I do have a warm fleece with a small logo on it that I wear for walk when it’s chilly, but it’s not a great color for me so I definitely do not consider it for actual outfits.

Forgive me if this comment shows up twice. I mistyped my email address the first time. (Thumbs!)

P.S. Again, as a redhead/strawberry blonde, the colors that work for me probably won’t work for everybody, but, for me, I was struck by how the wardrobe colors you selected for the Ruskin Meadow & Ginkgo scarves all work together & I have all of them in my wardrobe. I purchased the Ginkgo scarf, & Ruskin Meadow is beautiful too, but, in the terms you brought up of more muted vs. stronger/brighter, Ruskin Meadow is a bit more muted than I find works for me. I look forward to seeing how you build each of these wardrobes, & I’m especially looking forward to seeing what you put with my Ginkgo scarf!
Megan says
P.P.S. Besides having all of the colors in the Ginkgo scarf in my closet, I even happened to already have gold Ginkgo earrings. So, this scarf fit right into my closet in every way!
Sally in St Paul says
Talk about a perfect fit, Megan!
Cheryl Klassa says
Surprisingly, I like the brown wardrobe. Surprising because I don’t wear brown – like not ever, at all. Give m navy all the way, with accents of course.
Sports team logos – I still have one in college who played a club sport. So I do have logo apparel from that, and I do pull it out on occasion – when the football team was supposed to play a bowl game, sports day at school (high school teacher here). But I am more apt to wear school colors as someone else said. It will be interesting to see if I still wear it once he graduates.
Jennifer says
In Seattle in some public facing jobs you are expected to wear Seahawks gear. Some places as often as every game day, someplaces just do a couple times a year. Colors look fine on me but if not I would put an embroidery patch on a shirt whose color worked for me. Most team scarves are like mufflers so not that great for indoors.
AK says
I own one Tufts crew fleece. The logo is quite discreet and tasteful. It’s a practical piece worn often.
I also own a v neck sweater for my alma mater, a US women’s team soccer jersey, a Chelsea jersey, 3 American Outlaws t-shirts (supporters of US soccer.) All of these are much louder declarations, so they only get worn for specific events. In other words, anything that’s like a billboard is an “events” piece.
The approach taken by others to wear the colors, but not the screaming logos is rather brilliant.

Sigh…this is not my year…I understand the process of taking a scarf and building a wardrobe and that you were eager to mix the black with the rusts and browns. My core is black and black:) I cannot do justice to rust red and brown leather or the proposed green or just muddied shades in general. With a fair, pink complexion and blue eyes, it’s not me on many levels. I need contrast and blue based or strong clear accents. But that’s just me. Sooo using your formula I will grab one of my black based scarves and build a wardrobe from there! Maybe 2022 will be an interesting year in the closet after all!!
I draw the line at wearing fashion logos. Sports logos are fine at a game but don’t really fall into the sphere of fashion unless the wearer is a twelve year old.
Sheila says
I just received my Tree of Life scarf and wanted to chime in. I’m wearing an emerald green sweater today, and the scarf looked just fine with it – olive might be better, but the bright clear green works too. I’m unsure if I’m going to delve into the browns (haven’t worn brown since high school) but I can see wearing this with green, of course black, and there’s a smidgen of red in the pattern if you were so inclined. Possibly even the correct shade of pink would work, or an aubergine. (that’s kind of a purply-brown, right?) Anyway, my point being I think it’s going to be more versatile for me than one might think just looking at an online photo. I also picked up a camel jacket recently, and I can totally see this with the camel jacket and black top and pants. Also – on wearing black shoes w/navy. I do it all the time. Better than trying to make sure the different navies are compatible – which has been discussed before. Also, some navy is so dark it’s almost black anyway. That’s my additional 2 cents worth today!
Sally in St Paul says
Anonymous, I noticed and was a bit surprised that none of the six scarves this year cater to the classic winter/Snow White palette of black, white, and bright jewel tones with high contrast. I’m glad that you have found a scarf of your own to make this work for yourself, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who would be interested to here how your own experiment progresses.
Sally in St Paul says
My early favorite is the beige Sampler scarf wardrobe! The ivory and cool beiges are so great with the pop of pink and green…maybe it’s partly the vibrant spring floral feel in the cold Minnesota January that appeals so strongly, but I also really like how the ivory, mushroom, and stone colors work together. Often the beige wardrobes straddle the cool/warm undertone divide in a way that I don’t like as much, but I like this one a lot so far and hope the emphasis on cool beige continues. I have a cool beige (taupe-beige, I call it) pair of knit pants, and I would 100% wear them with the pink T and green cardigan together!

On the subject of sports team logos, I live in the same metro area as my alma mater for my Master’s degree & it’s a well known university with a recognizable logo & mascot. I have quite a few logo tops & toppers and even jewelry that I wear on game days in the fall and when visiting my younger son who is currently a student there. I also have non-logo clothing items in the school’s colors for when I want to “represent” but logo-wear isn’t appropriate.
As for the scarves, loving the chrysanthemums and the hydrangeas!
Deb says
Maybe because it’s a cold wet winter and I live in the Pacific Northwest, but I’m really loving on the brown and black wardrobes.
Deb says
PS Not a sports logo fan. I’ve just never been into sports (always picked last in PE – no surprise!). I do have a couple of logo tees which get worn when I’m in the garden, and sometimes when I’m feeling sassy I wear one to the staff meeting!
Megan M says
More than ten years ago I bought tall grey leather Naturalizer boots. The color is Elephant and the style is Barstowe. I doubt they are available. This reminds me to get them unboxed and reheeled.
The website Nature’s Jewelry sells a gold-plated Ginko leaf pendant.
X says
Have you looked at kettlewel? They have basics in a gadzillion colors, and you can filter on color+ texture
Margaret says
I, like many of the other respondents, don’t wear my sport team shirts any more. Haven’t sent them to Goodwill, and probably won’t, because there is always a chance for another Super Bowl or Stanley cup.
Love the hydrangea scarf. Beautiful! I enjoy watching you create options to fit the scarves. You have given me so much direction for my wardrobe choices.
Have you ever considered Tiffany windows for your “Start With Art” series. I noticed my entire wardrobe, since I have used your guidance, is in “View of Oyster Bay”. The window has my beloved navy as well as every other blue shirt in my closet. Sometimes I need a change and wear a pink cardigan or a green shirt. They are there. Even purples and browns are represented. This stained glass window confirmed my wardrobe choices.
Louise P says
Hi Janice,
I love all the wardrobes so far. Did a little Pantone research yesterday and see that brown is one of their colors this year, so you may have an easier time finding it for a wardrobe.
I never wear logo clothing. It’s not my job to be advertising for anyone or anything. They don’t pay me to wear this clothing or carry these accessories. I would wear something like that if it was my only choice. For example, my first trip to San Francisco, I almost froze. The nearest available sweatshirt had SF written on it. It became a practical necessity rather than a fashion choice.
Shrebee says
Janice,
I’m late to the party, but Happy and HEALTHY New Year to you, yours, and your other readers !
I am loving how you are showing a neutral core of 5 garments as a base, and it made me realize that I pretty much have the same thing in my closet with the addition of a vest in each neutral and sometimes both a cardigan with a collar and another without , depending upon what I wear under them, but all in the same neutral color. Then adding accents in tops, toppers, and accessories , though my shoes are usually in neutrals .
Beige— so hard to find in the marketplace— even in finding a tank top in the Summer ! It is such a mundane color, like black, you’d think that it would be everywhere , even if it would be featured just seasonally !
Sports logo clothes — I don’t have any , but my husband wears college logo clothing all of the time, depending which grandkid gifted them !
Anyway,I am looking forward this year to what I continue to learn from your creative and logical brain ! You have made such an impact on my packing choices , as well as in the number of pieces hanging in my closet ! Yaaaa for both space in my closet and contentment with what’s in there !
Pat says
I’ve missed your sage advice and wonderful suggestions. Welcome back, Shrebee and Happy New Year!
Your style sister,

Pat,
Oh how very nice, thank you ! Happy New Year to you and yours as well ! December was a busy month , which up is usually the case for most of us and sometimes I feel that Janice’s posts just need no input from me . They are perfect as they are ! Some posts resonate with me more than others, but that is because of the colors presented , or some concepts really ring a bell, like with the 5 core neutral groupings shown here !
Janice says
I always want input! Yes, my brain will crank out ideas pretty much forever all by itself – I just have to be awake and sitting at a computer! But I ALWAYS want to know what everyone thinks about… just about everything…
Without you, I could just sit here all day and make up wardrobes for my own entertainment, and what fun would that be?
hugs,
Janice

I think I’ll be keeping an eye on the beige set this year. The colours are all ones that I like and hopefully next year I get to be one of the shop-a-long set!
My logo stuff is all hobby specific, but as they are just t-shirts, they get brought out in the Summer or as workout gear.
Suzyn says
On my screen, all that rust brown looks fairly burgundy. Garnet jewelry would look gorgeous with that wardrobe!
Cindy says
Enjoying the black and rust from afar. These are not colors I can wear, but definitely seem to have the classic, mens- wear sort of vibe I admire. Navy is my one and pretty much only neutral, so will be watching that wardrobe most closely. In younger years, I wore pink and navy together and recall getting compliments. For some reason, I have strayed away from pink. (Maybe having 4 sons put the nail in pink’s coffin). However, I think it may be a good wardrobe consideration moving forward.
Beth T says
I will second Margaret’s idea of “Starting with Tiffany”. Such beautiful colours.
Allison Aul says
Lovely, as ever. If I wore scarves I would covet the Chrysanthemum and the Hydrangeas scarves, and my accents tend toward the green to blue to purple part of the spectrum so I will watch those with particular interest. Grey is my spring neutral and navy is my summer neutral and both of those are shaping up nicely.
As for logos. No. Not any more. Several years ago I donated all of my Washington football (US) paraphernalia when I could no longer stomach the way the owner was dealing, or in his case, not dealing with objections to the teams racist name. Now that the team has no name I’m not tempted to replace anything.
Linda P says
Hello Janice and Everyone! Great to hear from all of you on a variety of topics.
The Tree of Life scarf and color combination gets my vote. I was wondering about the actual hue of Lands End’s ‘rust red’ …If it is an actual ‘rust’ I would buy it, but if it is more like a garnet or burgundy I would pass because I have clothes in those colors already. (but I never can have enough rust in my closet ?).
The post on the ‘soft, warmly colored’ pieces reminded me of azaleas at the Master’s (Augusta, Georgia), which usually happens in April. I could see wearing those colors for that occasion.
Speaking of sports…I have a few sports/town logos on various types of clothing, which are worn on game days (in person or at home), or if I am going where there will be fellow sports fans and I want to brazenly advertise my team.
(to Lena: are you a Syracuse fan-? based on the orange and blue)
Big shout out to the teachers in the house. Bless you.

Hi!
“I’ve chosen black leather goods rather than navy because I just wasn’t seeing navy shoes that impressed me”
What about Tamaris? They have very nice Chelsea boots and loafers in navy. (And grey :-D).
Also, have you considered checking equestrian and outdoors retailers for basic tops, especially in olive and brown?
