This is great advice again, especially for those basics that are worn day in and day out. I have a few basics that I wish I had in multiples because they get so much wear. Beginning my fourth month and learning so much from your blog. Thank you for sharing.
Buying in bulk does pay off if like me there are mishaps in the laundry room :-( The pointe skinny leggings I purchased a year ago should have been a bulk buy….they are my favourites and who knew I'd wear them twice or three times a week?
Like Hostess, above, I fell in love with ponte pants. Luckily, I did bulk buy over the course of a year–as they went more and more on sale. Probably too time consuming…
My current favorite tees from LE are the modal blend ones, in the classic crewneck. They're very soft, pack down to nothing, and feel a bit dressier than the all-cotton ones. Which of course means that they'll be discontinued in about an hour… big hug, Vivienne
The black and white tees are both Vince Shirt tail tee. I've never purchased from them, but they offer a great assortment of tee shirts, and their photographs of white tee shirts are so great I can't pass up using them on my blog! thanks for asking, and thanks for being here, Vivienne
Perfect timing with this blog post! Im driving into San Francisco this morning for a shopping trip with my 21 year daughter. She's jstingerting to transition her style from college teen into a more polished and cohesive wardrobe…thanks to your excellent blog! And, now, I'll be stocking up on my spring basics while I'm there, because you're right, I really don't need anymore "impulse" buys! Thank you so very much for all the great ideas, insight and inspiration! You're the BEST!
And, you do save significant money if you shop by catalog or on line – the shipping on multiples is never as much as the shipping on one paid many times. Great idea.
The timing of this post couldn't be better. Lands' End is currently running a Buy More-Save More special: Buy 3, save $15 on select regularly-priced women's knit tops. It includes your modal blend faves in both the long and short sleeve versions. There’s nothing better than building a core wardrobe and stocking up on basics purchased at discounted prices! Thanks again for your invaluable info. I check in daily to discover what new pearls of wisdom you are sharing!
The Eddie Bauer pants are the Bremerton cut – they only make them (currently) in one fabric, which is a blend of cotton and synthetic with a soft hand and a good seasonless look. They USED to make cords in that cut, and I'm hopeful that they will make then in more fabrics in the future. thanks for being here, Vivienne
I had an anonymous tip off about your blog – I kid you not!! It is in my blogs comment box as proof & I have to say just as well as you have such a fabulous blog xx
I buy new black tights (3 pr.) plus 1 brown pair every fall, as weather gets cool. Every spring I buy new Ts from Target when they go on sale: only white, gray, charcoal, and black. I also buy new socks, black and white pairs. Every fall, I buy new long-sleeved Ts from Target, again white, black, gray, and charcoal, when they go on sale. Those are my bulk buys and yes, I have a happy feeling to know I've always got two new white Ts in my closet, whatever happens with coffee, red wine, chocolate, or salad dressing.
Vivienne, thank you. Like others, I've recently discovered you, am working my way thru' your blogs and am deeply appreciative at finding such wonderful advice and inspiration. Your ideas on how to co-ordinate and enliven a wardrobe of core basics are so helpful. I have a question though, which I hope doesn't sound too foolish since my dilemma is real. Most of the posts and suggestions include adding a beautiful Hermes or Hermes-like scarf to your neutrals, but how do I deal with this when e.g. eating or bending over to interact with small grandchildren, carrying things against my chest like library books, packages, again those small grandchildren:) ? I don't want to continually be removing and adding it, but that floppy colorful scarf, that brightens my fading hair/complexion and ties my boring neutrals together, is always in my way. Maybe I'm just not at a stage in my life where I can get rid of my myriad of colorful tees yet. How do others manage? Thanks, Nana
How about a small scarf – like a pocket square? folded on the diagonal, and tied in a wee tiny knot, it still brings a note of color and pattern to your outfit, but doesn't droop or hang down to get soiled when you're living your life. You can tie them rather loosely, so it doesn't look like you're trying to cover something on your neck, and so it's not too warm. I keep meaning to pillage my belovedest's pocket squares and wear them like this – maybe this is the time to start! big hug, Vivienne
