I have to be careful with accessories, because I love them so much. They are the paintbox to my blank canvas! I really like this tote bag and scarf!!

Hi I just came across your blog for the first time. Love these capsules you create and how you piece everything together.

I`ll take one of each, thank you.

I love this common wardrobe and would really like to dress this way, but I always feel black and white are too stark against my warmer complexion. Yet I see a lot of black and white on people with my coloring. Somehow doing the same thing in brown and off-white just doesn't seem nearly as stylish and classic. Am I mistaken? Any suggestions?
Grateful Follower,
Rebecca

My red-haired sister wears a lot of black along with brown, tan, sage green, etc. When she wears a black cardigan with a bone t-shirt and cocoa brown pants, she adds jewelry or a scarf in "her" colors — greens, browns, tans, oranges, etc. She knows that black is nor "her" color, but she wears it anyway, making sure "her" colors are near her face.
My colors are navy, charcoal, red, blue, etc. I love brown and have a lovely pair of brown pants that I wear with charcoal, white, black, blues, etc. Like my sister, I keep "my" colors near my face and integrate the brown in pants or skirts and in accessories.

Rebecca, you might want to take a look at Christine's post about black and white for the 12 seasons: http://12blueprints.com/black-and-white-for-12-seasons/
Most people's black and white are not true black and true white.

Try camel and navy! Janice has capsules in these colors on the site.

I like the accessories you put with the outfits, and would happily wear every one, except maybe a kitten heel with jeans. :-)

Janice, was your old advertising job writing catalogue copy for J. Peterman? :)

I love these! And I love the wardrobe basics. Why? I already own all of them and don't feel I have to rush out to buy something new. I already have what I need to be chic. ♥

This post is so timely for me! I purchased a beautiful marcasite necklace in Europe this summer. I thought that it would be only for evening but your post has me thinking about how I can incorporate it into my daytime wardrobe. I have lots of black (and white) in my wardrobe. Though, I am not tiny, at 5' 10" tall. I would love your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks, Hope

I'll just have all of the accessories please…skip the clothes.

Wow! What a gift, Janice. You just gave me the "bones" of my semi-retirement wardrobe. I'm going to get to closet purging as soon as the heat abates. Out with the skirted suits and travel dresses except probably one (black) of each, (for consulting) and in with the cashmere/silk sweaters and comfy tees. Thanks!

Hello Janice–
First, love your sense of style and color!
Second, could you do a collection in browns, blues, and purples for a casual workplace, something like your LL Bean collection of a few weeks ago? But, could you add in a few dressier pieces for attending conferences?
Thanks!
Julie says
My favorite thing about this wardrobe is that you used only 2 pairs of shoes.

The comments–here and elsewhere–show how desperate women are for advice like this. Many thanks for sharing your gift.

The whole reason I do this blog is so that women can move on to thinking about important things – their families, their jobs, their financial security, and the quality of life in the world. We let ourselves be distracted FAR too much by fashion, trends, and always being perfect. We have so many more essential things that we could be doing for ourselves, and for each other!

…though I have to thank that play, which this blog celebrates in the best way, must have some part of our lives, no?

Janice, ooooooh! have you seen the new fuller cut pants (Diane vonFurstenburg) that are the newest, neatest thing for fall. They sure would look better on me than skinny pants! Skinny pants and pear-shaped ladies don't work all that well!
Can you design us some wardrobes built around a looser (and perhaps a bit less expensive) pair of pants? thanks.

LOVE this. Add a black skirt and swap the lace tights for solid black and it's pretty close to what I do — this gives me confidence to keep going. But Janice, when I wear something like the top center or lower left, I always feel like I need a sweater or jacket or something. Thoughts?
