I bought this nifty little sack on Etsy – I believe the woman who made it is in Poland? It’s the perfect size for a stack of jewelry – my cuff bracelets fit perfectly into the bottom of the bag.
In order to keep things padded, I will probably toss in a pair of socks (or two), and slide necklaces down into the socks so they don’t scratch each other.
I pack a LOT of jewelry – it’s small, it’s light, it makes a ton of difference in the appearance of what I’m wearing. It’s all insured. Really, what’s the point in having nice things if I don’t take them with me on amazing vacations to Paris?

True story: Since reading your blog, I have slowly been learning how to dress and accessorize without looking "matchy matchy." Yesterday, a lovely young girl stopped me on the street to ask if she could take a picture of me for her "fashion blog." Janet, I owe it all to you. Truly! Merci beaucoup.

Beautiful jewelry. I will have to try this packing idea next time I travel. A question: How (and where on your clothing) do you were pins? I have some beautiful pins that I have collected over the years, but don't know the current style for wearing them. Thanks.
Janice says
I usually wear two or three at a time – on the collar of my winter coat, mostly. Or the lapel of a blazer. Or the shoulder of a cardigan. I wear them in pretty traditional places; brooches are so uncommon anymore that wear one at all is a radical fashion statement.

RE: the pins question – I have many vintage pins, but wearing just one big one at a time can come off as a bit old-fashioned. I tend to mix and match two or three at a time, either by color or by shape, and that looks more modern. Also, wear them on unexpected contemporary items of clothing (denim jackets, leather jackets, trench coats), or use them to hold a scarf fold in place.

Fabulous gems…I love those enamel bracelets.
The business card trick is something that would never have occurred to me.
You're ready for Paris!

GREAT tips on packing jewelry and SO true about how it's light and jazzes up an outfit. The business card idea for earrings is perfect! Thanks!

I saw another blog where necklaces were packed rolled in a scarf – very clever, and stops them tangling up.

Thanks for the great tips!! Do you put your jewelry bag near the bottom of your carryon to avoid theft, or do TSA agents typically ask that it be placed in its own conveyer belt bin?
Janice says
TSA has never once looked at my jewelry. You'd think that much metal in one place would catch their eye, but it must be something they see frequently.

Thanks Janice!

Great idea! I have something like this bag, too for my accessories. Also I have lots and lots of little cloth bags in which I put my necklaces and bracelets, so they won't tangle up. But I have never considered putting my stud-earrings onto a business card. Excellent idea! – I wish you a safe flight and a lovely holiday in Paris!!! :-)

Love the card idea. I usethe ziplock mini snack bags for necklaces… see thru.

Is that an index card you used to hold your studded earrings? I never know how to carry mine and I think you have solved my problem.

Forgive me for being completely off-topic with what follows, Janice (and I do hope you are having the time of your life in Paris!) I couldn't help but comment about this blogger who hits on many fascinating topics and they parallel a lot of what you are doing/covering here on more of deeper cognitive level.
One of your readers posted about her blog in an earlier topic and I've been heavily engaged (as I was when I found your blog)ever since! BTW, I mentioned your blog to/on hers as well:)
I found this post to go into much of what you've discussed with regard to fast fashion and ethical/environmental responsibility

She also asks some excellent questions and garners some interesting thoughts/feedback from her readers regarding "the classics". If you haven't already, check it out:

I think I may have been the reader you mentioned, and I'm glad you found the link interesting! I love her blog and just wish she found the time to write more, especially with her experiment in determining garment quality.

What a gorgeous collection of jewelry. The idea of packing necklaces inside socks is genius.

Thanks for all of the packing tips! I too accessorize with scarves and jewelry. I am heading on a business trip this weekend and while I wish my personal products were as streamlined as yours, they are not. Something for me to think about.

Great idea to attach earrings to a business card. Worked like a charm on a recent 8 day trip to Seattle. Thanks!
Packed a lot less than usual by using a brown and orange wardrobe. Your system is inspired!
