Well, that's one way to stretch a wardrobe. Actually it's a great idea. On occasion I have packed too light for a trip and wished I had a sweater or a pair of warmer shoes.

I'm not overly keen, I have to say – I have an English friend married to a French man living here in the UK, and she does this with her wardrobe and her daughters. It always looks slightly off. I suppose if it was a gloriously golden sunlit October day it would work – she does it right through the winter snow and slush. It's not the design of the clothes so much – that works quite well in the examples you've given – it's more the fabric that seems wrong. Just something slightly jarring that looks slightly off

I have to admit, it does extend the number of wearings for a summery frock but I would be very cautious about the fabric for myself. Since I'm not much of a dress wearer in the summer
I don't have many options that would work but I like the concept and have done it for travel in the winter with a black dress.
Dress becomes skirt, add opaques and a pullover sweater.

To my eye this looks off, also and mainly because I don't like the mix of different fabric weights. But I could see this work on a young and very slender body. Anyway, welcome back and I look forward to your sharing your trip with us.

I like the last 2 examples the best. I agree as others posted above that sometimes the look is a bit jarring, but interesting nonetheless!
Really nice transitions. Hard to do in certain parts of the country, like where I live. It's only October and I'm not warm enough wearing my sleeveless shirts with sweaters. I'm ready to go pick up a bunch of long-sleeved tees for layering.
American college students (who think they have invented The Dress) have been dressing this way all winter in North Carolina where I live for several years now. The insouciance of the style works best on the very young–and the very slim.
I've never thought of layering a pullover sweater over top of a dress…
I love that Tibi dress and those Vince boots together.
I love the look, but I agree that the style would better suit the young and/or the slim. For me, I'd just end up looking a shapeless mess if I threw a pullover sweater over a dress.
I love this look so much. I was recently shopping for a white sundress specifically because I love the way it looks with a chunky cardigan and brown riding boots! It has a very English/French country look to me. But I can only see it working in the fall in Chicago at least… the winter slush will do a number on those delicate dresses.
Hmmm… I like the idea and have considered it myself, but alas I am not young and slim. Still, surely it could be adapted. I have several sleeveless dresses by Eileen Fisher out of viscose jersey which is a fabric she uses year round.
A good way to maximise your investment in a dress
We have been doing this in Oz for a while the weather in Brisbane is very mild and you can get away with it wouldn't like to do it in London in winter though I would freeze
It is very Audry Hepburn fifities I prefer a nice cardi rather than a jumper
I wear dresses under sweaters, but I think the look works better if you stick to finer gauge, as opposed to the heavy cable knits. I also like to add something at the waist to keep the feminine shape. I'll wear silk underwear under the dress if it is really cold. Adds weight without the bulk.
