People wondered why I was eager to buy a denim shirt, and so I thought I’d show you the versatility that I see in them. While usage in the summer might be less frequent, there’s no question that this shirt could be worn 12 months of the year… And yes, some garments appear more than once here – sort of like in real life!
Mood has a lovely chambray style linen on their site and it could be combined with The Blouse Perfected from Cutting Line Designs.
I like the ideas but I think for June, July and August the shirt is just too heavy in mood for the beautiful ensembles you created. I'm more interested in buying one, but I'd stow it away in the summer.

I've always loved the idea of a denim shirt. I think it has a rustic appeal, but you can use it, as you've shown so brilliantly (as always), Janice, about its versatility. My issue with denim shirts is that I look fat in them. I'm not just being one of those "I feel fat today" women. Honestly, every single one I've tried on has made me look flatter chested than I already am and plumper than I am. My happy medium to this was a slightly darker wash chambray from Banana Republic. It's not a 'cozy soft' as buttery denim, but it's also not as thick…and is cut more like a regular button down…so, it's a bit more flattering. I just thought I'd throw that out there for any other 'I love denim, but it makes me look as wide as a house' feeling women.
By the way, Janice, I'm packing to go for a driving trip to Ontario, Canada from Maine. I'm literally packing the "Common Wardrobe", plus some seasonal accessories for warmth and pops of color. <3

I just bought one from Lauren Ralph Lauren Jeans. It's a dark, lightweight chambray, which I thought was a bit dressier than a lighter shade. Pretty reasonably priced.

This summer I found my first, really nice demim shirt online at MANGO. Unfortunately, the snap buttons were of such poor quality, three of them 'broke' at the moment I first tried it on.
But, since the color und fitting (slightly waisted) of the shirt were exactly what I had been looking for quite a long time, I decided to keep it anyway and to have the buttons replaced by 'normal' buttons. Shame about me, I haven't managed to go to the seamstress until today…
But now, when looking at these inpiring, inspiring pictures, it is impossible to wait any longer! :-)
A really big Thank You Janice. You know, I have never ever been so motivated, so inspired, so straight. May I mention that my husband is thrilled about this change, too.

I love a denim shirt, but these looks feel so muted and blah. I think denim is best treated as a neutral rather than a blue. It goes so well with colors.
Hi Janice! I just love the wardrobe ideas you give us. May I suggest a shoe and handbag 'wardrobe'. I never seem to have the 'right' one. Perhaps you can give us a high, medium and low price scale for these items. Thank you so much Janice.
Two things: 1) I have to have my prescription checked because I thought you had mentioned a denim skirt instead of shirt in your earlier post, and 2) I, too am very much on the fence about a denim shirt. Like Ellen, I never thought they flatter me. However, I have never had one of high quality.
Laffayette 148 did a simply stunning one last year — simple, fitted, high quality. Knew enough to pass on it. Denim/chambray doesn't work so well for me. I love all of the options, here. What I love the best about this blog — other than is is absolutely beautiful, is the way Janice teaches how to incorporate our own versions of the staples into wardrobes that work for each of us. I also loved the denim shirt that Lafayette did last year and wished that I HAD bought it. I bought a less expensive version from Talbots. It is a dark wash, it is a bit fitted and can be flatteringly tucked in (so it doesn't make me look overweight as others have mentioned that denim shirts can do), and it has a bit of stretch to it. I will definitely wear it after being inspired by the pictures. March, May, and December fit right into my outfit plan. I am a school teacher and have all of the basics needed. Many thanks for another brilliant arrangement. I read your blog every day Janice, but this is the first time that I have commented. As a 'woman of a certain age',I learn much from you, and I am constantly encouraged to stay current and try something new.
What a great choice if this is the shirt you bought! I have a pair of pants in then il denim and I love them. They drape beautifully. I think I will splurge and get this shirt myself as I've been looking for a great denim shirt without breast pockets. This so perfect because the fabric can dress up or down. .. And your combos here -amazing as usual! Is this the shirt you bought?
So clever! I have a denim shirt I almost never wear because it seems too casual for most occasions. This post has given me some great ideas. And, except for a few of the months' outfits, I can see substituting a classic white shirt or other "classic" shirt. Lots of food for thought. P.S. I also thought you said "skirt" in an earlier post and was wondering what you'd do with a denim skirt — which seems to have rather more limitations.
I haven't owned a denim shirt in 20 years. You do manage to style it in a lovely way that look feminine.
Few items can be so right or so wrong as a denim shirt. The ones I've loved had feminine details, like a princess seam or graceful collar. I'm fond of snap-fronts and deep-indigo coloured substantial denim. Way too warm to wear one here (Montréal) in July or August, though, unless it is only denim in colour, in a very thin cotton.

I see the summer outfits as using the shirt as an air conditioner sweater for the business casual office or going out anywhere but really dressy places. I live in a very hot and humid climate, but I'm loving the idea of a soft denim shirt as a chic throw-over, fresher in spirit than the standard cardi. I'm inspired.
I have a nice denim shirt I bought a few years ago—and I've never worn it! It's from Chico's but of a better quality than their usual things. I often try it on and think it looks fine, but it never quite makes it out the door. Our weather is so difficult (Texas) than it is either too warm to wear it or it is not warm enough. I think perhaps the issue is that the sleeves are three quarters rather than full length.
Janice where did you source that allsaints tux jacket? It's so perfect with the denim! Must get one now.
