How great to be able to attend these first-rate cultural institutions. Bet you looked wonderful! I particularly like these analytical posts: I'm adopting the drill on a daily basis, but always find inspiration in your own analyses. I think my shoes need to be more exciting. I have really nice, but basic, loafers, pumps, boots, etc. Since my outfits are also basic in color and line, something should shine. I pick it up a bit with great socks, tights, jewelry, and scarves, but shoes….
The gold loafers were a real reach for me, but I've found that there are a LOT of times where they're just the punch of life that my otherwise pretty neutral wardrobe craves!
I do love velvet in winter! It's lush and very comforting somehow.
Wow, I cannot believe how the gold loafers and accessories lift Tuesdays otherwise very basic outfit……..adds to shopping list

Those earrings are from Cartier – they're maybe 2cm in diameter. They do make them in a larger size too, but I felt that the larger were just not right for me. I wear them often because we both have the Trinity wedding rings, too.

Returned to say: I have some gold loafers and I'm going to wear them more. I don't have a Hermes blk/gold scarf, but I do have a scarf in those colors. Very inspiring.
So lucky to live near the Art Institute. I spent a summer in Evanston and joined the museum. We may make a visit to your great city in the next year or two. Can't wait.
Packing for Massachusetts and babysitting this weekend. Taking my inspiration from your overnight bag. I need to be comfortable, warm, but presentable since we will probably take my precious out supper. Also will go into Boston on Sunday for brunch with the youngest son. Any suggestions on what I can throw in the bag for the urban visit? Will have black slacks, white shirt and a scarf (to be determined) at my disposal. Love this series, as always.

My solid black cardigan is cashmere, from Lands' End, and it's about six or seven years old. If I were to replace it, I would probably get one from L.L.Bean, as I think their quality is better now. The black & white cardigan is from Pendleton, and it's 3 or 4 years old. It's merino, and I love it…
I agree with you about Lands' End/LL Bean quality issues.
But — back in the day. Oh! Lands End was beautiful stuff!

Such an inspiration. Have been living out of a little suitcase for three weeks in Normandy. I am thinking I could do the 333! Such an inspiration. I don't know why, but it seems a bit more difficult when black is not the main basic color. Can't wait for my next trip to Chicago! Susan
Just moved to Chicago and would love some fleece lined tights (also cashmere socks) for commuting in 10 degree and below weather. Where did you find fleece lined tights?
I'm pretty sure I found my tights at Nordstrom – make sure you buy them BIG, because they tend to run short in the legs. And cashmere socks aren't all that they're cracked up to be – good wool socks are every bit as warm and a lot more durable.

Hi Janice, thank you for your terrific posts. They are a great way to start my day! I have a challenge for you. I am planning a trip to England and France in May. Lucky me! I need some packing help. The trip will include some hiking in the country and London and Paris. The highlight if the trip is a rock concert at the Royal Albert Hall! What to pack ? Hiking boots, city boots, tench coat, anorak? Any wardrobe selection you can help with would be greatly appreciated!
