Someone asked me if it would be possible to replicate last week’s travel wardrobe with grey in place of navy. Of course! This plan will work with any 2 neutral colors, and any 2 accent colors…
love,
Janice

Thank you! This is perfect for me. I love khaki, in theory, but really can't/don't wear it. Grey, on the other hand, is one of my core neutrals.

Speaking of neutrals, I find that I use navy and gray as my neutrals in fall and winter. Then in spring and summer, I keep the navy but pair it with khaki instead of gray.
The same seasonal switch out would work, of course, with black and gray for fall and winter and black and khaki for spring and summer.
It probably would be simpler to keep the same core neutrals year round, but this seasonal variation seems to work without too much difficulty.

I have a question–and I would not ask it if I knew the answer. Janice–maybe you know. Are summer colors different by geographical area? I love gray–but cannot imagine it as a core color of my wardrobe in Dallas, Tx. I DO have a gray knit sleeveless summer dress–but no pants, etc. Our weather is so sunny and SO hot–it just seems that other colors are better suited. So–are colors determined by climate and area? Or, just by preference?

Yes, Susan, women in the southern states do wear lighter and brighter colors than our northern sisters. While I have a few gray pieces, I either wear them in the winter or in a sheerer fabric. I often use red as a neutral. I learned many years ago to only wear colors that look good on me, and this has saved me a lot of money and stress. I'm an Oklahoma/Texas girl myself, so I know what you are talking about. My seasonal changes are more fabric weight than color. Wear what enhances YOU!

I do that Beverly. And, as you know, we don't wear a lot of long sleeves when it gets hot. I'm not one of those women who won't show her arms. I'm wearing a sleeveless knit dress right now. I do have a few VERY light (and some short sleeved) sweaters for wearing in cold restaurants–but would not run around town in a sweater or long sleeves when it is 104 degrees. We wear navy a lot here and white of course–plenty of shades of blue. I don't shy away from wearing white pants either.

I love the design of that gray dress…so flattering. I am in the south and we do love our colors. That said, I have been in a neutral state of mind lately and pastels really are not attractive at all. I love the red here however.

This is not a specific question about this travel wardrobe, but rather one of semantics. I would call each of the illustrated groups of clothing and accessories an "outfit." I used that term on the Rick Steves Traveler's Helpline in the context of packing for a trip. I referred people to the great advice and examples of coordinating clothing and accessories shown on the Vivienne Files. More than one person has responded in a way like this, "don't plan outfits, plan to bring things that coordinate with each other." One guy said not to plan outfits but "looks." I thought the terms were almost synonymous and so do most definitions. Would someone set me straight here, please?
