Even those of us who would rather wear gym clothes sometimes have to go on business trips… so we have to pack in a way that strikes a balance between work-appropriate and our personal style. A tuxedo-ish coat, some dapper trousers, a youthful pleated skirt and a cardigan make up the core around which everything else will revolve.
An accent color is important – purple is used here – another simple cardigan, a snazzy turtleneck, and a silk blouse all work together. The oxfords were irresistible.
The tops appealed to my tomboy side, but they still will look fine with the black suit pieces… And you can’t travel without loafers!
Sigh… but a dress will be required, and some tweed pieces finish out the wardrobe in a way that our inner tomboy can feel comfortable, but still fit in at the obligatory work functions. And pumps… sigh… At least they have low heels!
Since this wardrobe has some vivid color, and a lot of pattern and texture, a lot of accessories aren’t really needed – a couple of beautiful scarves, jewelry, SUNGLASSES (always sunglasses), and some tights, which bridge the gap between a skirt (for business) and loafers (for my inner rebellious child).
love,
Janice

I have no inner tomboy, but think these combinations are fabulous. I might have to make a few substitutions to account for what looks good on my body type, but I'm amazed at how versatile this group is. I'll be studying it further.

I think this is a fall/winter wardrobe anonymous–but I understand what you are saying and hope that Tish will design just a few hot weather wardrobes for those of us who need to wear next to nothing for months of the year!

This would be me. I love my jeans but this is a gorgeous capsule and one I would happily try and wear.

Am going to Europe for September – trip involves a Rhine cruise, Lake Como and Venice as well as visiting relatives in England. Black and purple/mauve are my trip clothes. Would you add black capri pants, black walking sandals and a few lighter tops and delete the tweed skirt and pants? I have those but think they might be too warm? Any thoughts appreciated!

Hi Sandra. I took a similar trip several years ago. I was in Venice and Como late September. The weather was mild during the day and quite cool in the evening. Spring/Fall weight fabrics worked for me. These included lighter weight wools and heavier weight cottons. Long pants were perfect in Como. I spent most of my time in Venice in dresses and skirts. Layers worked beautifully; sleeveless and short sleeved tops over which I could wear lightweight cashmere sweaters.
I'm very excited for you! What a beautiful trip!!

Thanks so much – I was thinking skirts for Venice and glad to know how you found the weather – was planning on a cashmere cardigan (and might be tempted to buy another one in London before the continental part of the trip!). We are looking forward to this trip as well! Sandra

Travel is very unpredictable..I have been in Ireland with jackets and long sleeved shirts (coordinated with Janice`s guidance!) and they are having a record period of Sun and warn weather. I really am happy about the clear skies, but I am getting tired of my few short sleeved tops!

I have been a road warrior for years. I learned, early on, that basic black makes packing a breeze. Black (for whatever reason) ALWAYS seems to go with black (unlike navy that can take on so many shade variations that mix/match is a challenge). Black clothes require one pair of work shoes – black. Hence, less space in the ol' Tumi.
Just as you suggest, I pack accent color items to give the wardrobe some personality (usually cerulean blue). Most scarves make me look frumpy (I'm 5'1") so I focus on jewelry to add interest.

Just saw this on a website and thought your readers might enjoy it as it sums up much of what I read on your blog:
