Another promoted post. Talbots gave me some stuff, and some things for you too!
Talbots was always the “go to” store for ladylike clothes… I remember when Belovedest and I moved back from Ireland, and I was wearing the smallest clothing size I’ve worn since high school, and I really NEEDED a “kick butt and take names” suit – I went to Talbots. When I worked in an office, the family gift cards were ALWAYS for Talbots…
I have to admit, though, that I’ve always had reservations about the term “lady.” I always felt that it meant older, and more retiring, and genteel in a way that might mean being a doormat. The idea of manners and good breeding and appropriate conduct appealed, though… I was conflicted.
Which is why I’m happy to embrace Talbots’ current efforts to reclaim the term “lady,” on our terms. Or, as they put it: “being a “lady” is defining it for yourself and being unapologetically you – real, confident, fun, and imperfectly enchanting.”
So how does this involve us all? First, Talbots gave me some more clothes! Let’s look at what tempted…
Obviously – I’m always interested in something black and white, or black and grey. Snuggly, sweatery, and long-sleeved are ALL in the rotation now that the temperature dropped a solid 30 degrees in the last few days!

I’ve been mad about cables since I was a little girl – and some of these colors are pretty appealing! The tweedy cabled sweater sort of has my name written on it, too. And I was pleased to note that the cardigan that I bought before I went to Paris is still catching my eye as I scroll through the Internet…

I briefly flirted with the idea of a marled, tweedy dress… And BOTH of these floral sweaters keep attracting my attention; I’m going to have to be alert to this sudden (and somewhat out of character) interest in florals!

But #becauseimalady, I know enough to take the advice of my friends! When I reviewed what I packed for Paris, quite a few of you noted that I seem to have a pretty serious affection for the black and white marled garments that I own. So when I saw these 2 pieces, and I remember what you all had said, I knew that I had winners!

I have great affection for Talbots – when I used to work in an office, I wore Talbots blazers nearly every single day. I had them in every available color – in wool for winter and linen for summer. And I had a great many Talbots dresses and skirts that I wore with them. I thought of them as my version of my male colleague's suits – my uniform. But never was a uniform so varied and colorful.
#becauseimalady I finally realized that would looks good on me is so personal and distinctive. Trends, and what others wear can influence me, but only I know what really works for me!

#becauseimalady Talbots has been a favorite of mine for at least a decade. Great style, consistent fits, reliable quality. I love that I have pieces that are 5+ years old that still look great and work with current pieces! They mix traditional with stylish in a perfect blend. As do you, Janice!
#because I'm a lady, I try to dress appropriately. Sustainability is coming to the forefront of my clothes consciousness. Janice has given us the tools to be intelligent consumers.

Ooh, some good comments already. I'm with you, I have mixed feelings about the word lady. It often has a condescending subtext, especially when used by a man speaking to a group of women he refers to as ladies, but the idea of "reclaiming" the word is intriguing.

I rediscovered Talbots last year when rebuilding a wardrobe after losing weight. After feeling dismissed in another store, I walked in and was greeted by a most helpful sales associate. She spent hours helping me find the proper new sizes, providing a critical eye, and putting together basic pieces to give me the most bang for my buck.
I recently added in the Paris cardigan. It caught my eye in the catalog, and your post convinced me of its versatility. Thank you, Janice!
#becauseiamalady I help people whenever I can without letting anyone know. I love the Ann Lamott quote that earth is forgiveness school and we are all just walking each other home. Also, I LOVE Talbots, the have petites that are the right shape for me. Been wearing them for the past 40 years to teach, still wearing them retired.

#becauseimalady I dress comfortably, age appropriately and professionally with an eye towards quality and classic attire and dressing for who I am.
#becauseimalady I spend hours at the thrift store helping my young adult daughter put together an outfit. We sort through rack after rack for possibilities and then I give feedback as she tries things on, pointing out why some things don't play nicely together, how cheap garments and quality garments hang differently, what colors and lines work best on her, and encouraging her toward appropriateness, all while not imposing my style on her.

#becauseiamalady I packed light for a six day trip to London and Aarhus. All garments were either black or white with a silk scarf used to add some color punch. I looked and felt like a million bucks and was ready for all occasions, which included sightseeing, semi-formal dinners and a performance of The Magic Flute at the Royal Opera in London! Never forget to pack a LBD!
