Our heroine loved Monday’s wardrobe, except she just can’t imagine traveling to her kinds of destinations without denim. Lots of denim… So Echo releases another Echo 100 scarf, in perfect colors for her!
(true story, what are the chances?)
This is the color palette that she really wants!
She loves to travel wearing her denim jacket. She can’t explain it, and she doesn’t have to!
I agree with our heroine on this – there are very few people who can’t find a good use for a denim shirt:
JEANS!!!! Along with a favorite tee, a nifty hat, warm sweater, and water-resistant sneakers…
She’s going to pack her denim dress, because it generally happens that they find something to do in which she feels comfortable in a dress. But it could get cool, so she remembers that her corduroy shirt is a perfect jacket…
It’s not a ton of clothes, but for her, it’s the right clothes!
She knows that she will be perfectly happy with just four outfits, but she also knows that she has a wide range of possibilities, including outfits that include NO denim. (the very idea…)
How would you be with this wardrobe for a week or two? Although I almost never pack denim, I can easily see how this wardrobe could work for a lot of vacations, including 10 days in Paris. The world isn’t nearly as dressy as it used to be!
love,
Janice
p.s. Our ten year ago flashback is to a Four by Four Wardrobe in grey, brown, gold and green! Yes, it can be done…

I liked this scarf when I first saw it, & this capsule & the story to go along with it makes me like it even more.
And I can shop my closet to put similar outfits together. Although my colors are blue, cream & moss/olive green.
Thank you.

With your colors in mind, I encourage you to look at the Artifact scarf via Wolf and Badger Janice linked to last week. When I clicked on the link, I saw another scarf – big daisies – in those exact colors. It’s on its way to my house. 😉 Thanks, Janice!
Janice says
I think their scarves are amazing! I can’t put my finger on what appeals to me so much, but they have stuck in my memory. Given that I look at (seriously) thousands of objects every day that I assemble a blog post, for me to remember an entire bunch of things from one brand is pretty amazing! Well, for me to remember much of anything, these days, is an accomplishment…
hugs,
Janice

These have given me food for thought for an upcoming two night weekend away. Not my colours but I could work round – turquoise, pink and blue/grey.

What a great capsule, based around such a gorgeous scarf – and with dragonflies too, my favourite. I love it. Thanks for putting this together and sharing it. Now that we have a nip in the air morning and evening (this is NE Scotland!) I shall reluctantly be putting away my not-much-worn linens soon and this is just the inspiration I need to reconfigure my autumn wardrobe.
She-roe of math says
Sorry but THIS heroine loves math and I guess the chances are about 1%! 1 out of 100 scarves, maybe?
I guess it would depend on how picky she is about the colors, too, not sure how to calculate that part!
Janice says
I love math too – I think part of what keeps me interested in The Vivienne Files is the possibilities of X number of garments = Y number of outfits!
But I have noticed that a lot of the scarves tend to have similar color palettes, especially black and white with bright accents. Or maybe I notice those because it was my wardrobe palette for so many years.

I have noticed the same thing with scarf colors. There were a couple I have liked but black instead of navy so they won’t be making their to me.
Kim says
Love this with the denim added! I’m a denim girl so this would work for me if I tweaked the other colors.
Sheila says
I always like the idea of a denim jacket, and I love them on other people, but when I have one I never wear it. I’m just a sweater/sweatshirt kind of girl I guess. I prefer the softer knits. Nor do I wear jeans. I will say that when I first saw the scarf I went – oh wow – again, I love the idea of it, but totally not my colors…. Which only goes to prove you can love the beauty of something while still realizing it’s not for you. Have a great day ladies.
April in SugarLand says
I have a “denim” jacket that’s actually a heavy French terry knit. I do wear it more than the old denim jacket I had previously. But. It’s not frequently the right temp for me to add that second layer, and when we do get cold, it s not warm enough. Super weird.
Regina says
More than perfectly amazing… this is “so me” … I can’t wait to find the time to pull all what I have in my wardrobe to make these last 2 capsules with those echo scarves happen for me!
Thank you as always Janice
Sally in St Paul says
I love the addition of blue denim to this wardrobe – it functions as a neutral but gives a nice contrasting color to the otherwise shades-of-brown vibe. And with blue and orange as opposites on the color wheel, I think the rust and warm browns are especially well complimented/complemented by the blue denim.
For those who don’t prefer this color palette, it would be very easy to sub in colors of one’s choice.
My only hesitation about so many denim pieces in a small travel capsule is that I personally just can’t do the double denim Texas/Canadian tuxedo look. Even when it’s trendy, it’s gives me flashbacks to how people (not me) wore it back in my small town Oklahoma childhood, and that association gives me a big old Nope to this look. Never say never, sure, but pairing multiple pieces of blue denim is not something I’m personally prepared to do these days. That said, objectively it can look great and I have no judgment for those who love to wear it. And who knows, maybe as time continues to wear down any negative associations I’ll find myself wearing it in the future!
Laura Short says
Love your scarf = capsule wardrobe inspirations! This one in particular; I think this brown is new and fresh. Thank you!
Wendy says
I haven’t worn brown since my brown-loving mother stopped buying my clothes in the mid-70’s. Lol!
Having said that, I’m really taken by today’s shade of brown. Is it cinnamon? Tobacco? Cognac? I love its richness and am pondering the potential of pairing other colours with it.
Maybe that could be an upcoming post – a deep dive into wearing this colour with other accents? (Maybe it’s already been done? My memory isn’t that good.). My brain instantly goes to aqua and periwinkle but dove grey, a mid-tone purple or butter yellow could be pretty wonderful too. Just spitballing here.
Such a beautiful scarf and I always love imagining the woman and her trip wearing the wardrobe of the moment.
Janice says
I wear brown with black. I shouldn’t be surprised that it works so well – the irises of my eyes include brown, and they surround the black pupil…
hugs,
Janice
Vancouver Barbara says
Parisian women wear brown with black. Tres chic. They also wear navy with black. Also tres chic.
Wendy says
I had t thought of black but it would, indeed, look marvellous! I worked for a female lawyer and my favourite of all her dresses was a chic brown and black number.
Kristi says
Oh, a capsule with lots of denim! I love it :) I have tried to find a denim jacket that I’m comfortable in because I love jeans and have a looser rayon/chambray shirt. But all the jackets are too tight in the shoulders (I am broad there) and I don’t love the stiffness of them. I am a cardigan girl at heart. But that’s ok! This is a wonderful color palette. Thanks!!

The true workhorses of my wardrobe are the denim shirts. I have Levi’s brand, dark and light wash, stretch and regular. I wear them in winter under scratchy woolen jerseys and over thermal underwear, in spring and fall under a loose cardigan or shawl, in summer they are my warm item for when the night falls or the AC is too strong. Always in my travel capsules for that very reason, as they can pack much better than other options.
I wear them with jeans (same wash or contrast) for an all-blue, all-denim look, with tan corduroy pants or a bright orange corduroy skirt for contrast, and even over flower print dresses to dress down the wardrobe sleeper and make it wearable in my daily life. They’ve lasted through many seasons and many, many laundry circles with only a dignified discoloration, the snaps tight as the first day, the fit just right.
I can wax poetry on denim shirts all day long. My only regret is not realizing sooner how awesome they are.
Treva says
I’m also seeing some black and gray to go with the denim. Hmm?
Sandi says
I love that hat! Is there an age limit on newsboy hats? I have three, but I feel foolish wearing them, so they sit in a hat box. I have other hats I wear, but as much as I love this style, I wonder it it’s age appropriate. Yes, you can tell me I’m being silly, lol.
Pam says
I had to laugh at your blog today because it feels like you might have been eavesdropping on the conversation in my brain the last few weeks. Returning to Paris and other locations in France for a month in October and have been going back and forth on whether to take my favorite denim shirt as a completer piece. Apparently, now, I will be taking it, lol!! Thank you and as always I bow to you!
Teri says
I love the color combo of this grouping. I wear causal and denim frequently, however I am struggling with some of the pieces. My eyes see one dress, 2 tees, 3 pants, and 5 second layers! Anyone else feel that, or is it only me? I would just switch the cream corduroy shirt and the denim shirt for tees or lighter weight blouses in the same colors. Any thoughts?
Jeri B says
Teri,
I see what you see. But I think you could wear the beige cardigan, the corduroy shirt, and the denim shirt as primary or second layers. I don’t think I’d have a place to wear a corduroy shirt, but the other two could work even here in Florida in the winter.
Lovely color palette. I’ve already picked out some pieces from my closet that correspond to these pieces.
As always, thank you, Janice.
Dee says
Lovely relaxed wardrobe and such a fun scarf. Never tire of looking at posts of 4×4 wardrobes, so many of them could still be worn today. Love that.
Meg says
What a treat to see a women’s hat that comes in different sizes! The one-size models never fit me.
Thanks so much for introducing me to Brixton in your links for this post, Janice. I looked at their site for other colors of the hat you linked (rose gold; olive) and I’m impressed by their sustainability statement, too.
Maria says
oh yeah, that’s exactly how I imagined it, I take them 1 to 1.🤩
Rebecca says
Oooh, I love the addition of the hat for fall.
Ellen S. says
I am completely in love with these colors for transition to fall. Thank you for adding denim…I’m a huge fan. I have a denim jacket, a traditional denim blazer and a denim “Chanel”-esque jacket, all from Talbot’s. This whole vibe is remarkable!
