Uncertain Weather on Your Long Weekend? Start With Art – Study for Spring Madonna by Mainie Jellett

May 7, 2025

A favorite artist featured at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin? She’s on the train for a weekend visit!

She’s studied this painting SO MUCH – she knows the colors by heart:

Ireland’s been having record warm weather recently, but this heroine is far too wise to fall for THAT! She’s making certain to have a jacket and warm shoes; she doesn’t have to wear these things again on her trip, but she’s certainly not traveling without them.

Earrings – Kate Spade; necklace – Shar Oke; deep olive jacket – L.L.Bean; dark twilight blue tee – L.L.Bean; deep olive pants – L.L.Bean; sneakers – Flexus by Spring Step; bag – Béis

A dress and three very summery tops, but a pair of “real” pants, and a cardigan – this give her options for unpredictable weather. And her olive jacket will look great with her stone chinos and ivory sweaters…

Ivory tee shirt – Lands’ End; earrings – Talbots; scarf – Kargede; earrings – Harfi; teal print top – L.L.Bean; ivory cotton cardigan – Lands’ End; bracelets – Fierce Lynx Designs; Heritage stone twill pants – L.L.Bean; bag – Talbots; teal tank top – Primary; blue dress – Boden; gold sandals – Reef; gold loafers – Vince Camuto

The night before she leaves, she takes a look at everything. A pair of earrings in her three primary colors – check. Warm shoes, classic loafers, sandals – check. Toss in some underwear, and a nightgown, and she’s good to go!

She will only be in Dublin for 3 days – she may not even wear everything she’s packed! But she has choices:

Yes, this was an exhibit that I was going to see, if we had been able to stay longer in Dublin. But at least I’m learning all about two wonderful artists!

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, I found a wonderful scarf on a now defunct website. The beauty continues, even if the retail outlet doesn’t!

    Beautiful 🤩
I love wearing olive with turquoise and shades of blue
    (also with gray and burgundy).
And the accessories are again perfectly chosen. I could get by with these colors for quite a while.

The dress is so elegant for visiting an art gallery perhaps on a members only evening. Such a lovely shade of blue which is rarely seen. Lovely shades of green to but I’d have grey as my neutral. The bag is the size I would take for an evening but I need a much bigger handbag in the day. I had a look at the Kargede scarves. There was a lovely one in purple that was stunning but the price is out of my league. It’s high time that I visited the Ashmolean in Oxford or the V&A in London.

The minimalist style of this painting is very appealing. (scurries off to find out more about the artist.)
The blue of the dress is absolutely lovely. The style doesn’t work for me, but I will keep searching for this color.
Gold sandals and loafers are so very useful.
The bit about our heroine not being fooled by the warm weather reminds me of an Irish musician/comedian who has lately posted some hilarious commentary about the heat. His name is Garron Noone. (WARNING: he can be a bit profane.)

I love that she uses the same purse the whole time. I am likely to misplace or forget things by switching purses so it is much more practical to stick with one for as long as possible!

Love love love that necklace! It’s really horrible when you plan for one type of weather and get another! Usually, I think it’s going to be warmer than it is and then freeze to death. Happy this heroine is more prepared than I would be!

Perfect wardrobe for May travel! Yesterday I was in short sleeves and skort, today jeans and sweater lol. I was lucky enough to find a dress in this blue for an upcoming summer wedding. I too have looked up this artist as well as Evie Hone. Thank you for introducing us to these wonderful artists.

I love this painting! Thank you for introducing me to so so many artists. These colors are lovely and could certainly work with the O’Keefe wardrobe you are building. I have a midi linen dress from J.Jill in this blue. I just love it and always get complements when I wear it. I think it’s a good color for many of us. Holle I agree with you about changing purses. I have to be “focused” when I do or something gets left out.

On my iPad the darkest color in the artwork looked brown. Then the first outfit in olive? So confused that I went back for a closer look at the painting! All of the beige based wardrobes are so beautiful to my eyes. I do have a few purses but mostly stick to one small navy leather wristlet. It will hold the minimum of essentials but limits the amount of garbage I pack around! A win for me. Plus it easily fits in the jockybox which is also handy for me.

I continue to think about the 3 neutrals + 3 accents from last September. Any chance we could revisit that with different colors and summer styles? Thanks for posts. My packing has definitely improved.

April, I too really liked that series. It helped me organize. I hope we see it again.

Love the dress, what a beautiful shade of blue. And the lookback/s – it was lovely to appreciate again the three wardrobes (!) coming out of the flowered scarf.

While I just can’t bring myself to wear head to toe olive (I feel somewhere between the Jolly Green Giant and a Marine lying in wait for an enemy), I do love the individual olive pieces to be worn separately. One thing I’m really drawn to in this collection are the gold accessories—shoes, bag, jewelry. I am an enormous fan of metallic accessories because I truly believe it can jeuge up even the most simple of outfits. For example, today I’m wearing a pair of cropped khakis with a white tee…pretty basic as far as my color loving self goes. However, I have on a gold leather belt (from J. Crew), gold sandals (from Talbots) and a fun gold stone necklace (Elisa from Kendra Scott). I have been at work for an hour and have already received compliments!

I think that the big idea to remember with these metallic accents is for them to have a ‘soft’ sheen. Super bright ones just too shiny (which I personally read as tacky) and can bring an outfit down. The soft sheen, in an understated way, read as elegant. Just my very humble opinion, but it works for me.
