Happy Christmas to all who observe today, and a happy and joyful day to everybody!
So after wrangling, pondering, occasional hair-pulling, and a lot of general angst, I chose the six paintings for next year. This is – no question – the hardest thing I EVER do for The Vivienne Files, so if your favorite painting wasn’t chosen, don’t doubt that it was considered, and re-considered, and finally eliminated with great pain.
If there’s anything you particularly miss, let me know and I will do a post about it! That’s the least I can do, eh?
With no further ado – let’s go!
This is the second year in a row that I’ve included Elizabeth Magill – I think she’s got magical talent…
This heroine is going to explore the possibilities of a range of grey, accented with a range of plum in a variety of intensities. Her jewelry will be set in gold – which is a surprise, until you note that the right side of the painting includes a pronounced gold accent!
I forgot to tell you – the single most elegant and eye-catching woman I saw in Paris was wearing a range of shades of grey, with a grey plaid scarf, grey coat, hat, pants and boots. She got past me so quickly that I barely registered what she was wearing, except that it was stunning! Her hair was warm auburn, and her complexion warm and freckled; the grey was flattering – like topaz set in silver!
This year, all of our heroines are starting with the same general group of clothing, including jeans and leather sneakers. It’s what so many people normally wear now – it seemed like a good base upon which to build!
And this heroine has chosen to grab a pair of earrings that are PERFECT for her palette. Maybe she should have started with a simple gray pearl, but she wasn’t going to miss these…
As is only reasonable, two-thirds of our artists are women. And I think I include Georgia O’Keeffe every year, for a good reason. Her palettes are simple and limited, but always a bit off the beaten track, and beautiful!
I picture this heroine with eyes that change color between blue and green – what do you think?
This heroine could easily have found a classic ivory cashmere scarf – but she spotted this green scarf, and knew that sometimes you just have to “carpe diem.”
I know nothing of this artist – but we’re going to remedy that!
I think that this heroine has a very relaxed personal style, and that she usually wears soft colors – except for her favorite teal!
I think when you’re signature painting is by the sea, mother-of-pearl earrings just make sense!
This painting just kept sticking in my mind, which is a sign that I need to spend some time with it:
This heroine loves the warmth of the painting, and the million shades of warm green here:
It’s a good thing that she’s open to a lot of different greens, because finding these colors is NOT going to be easy…
And FWIW, this scarf comes in a lot of colors – if you’re struggling to find a really good quality scarf in a particular color, check Franci out!
This is such a great painting – warm and cool, light and dark. Delaunay was pretty talented, eh?
The juxtaposition of navy and brown is classic, and the accent shades of blue-green, and of cream, should come together in a classically beautiful wardrobe – if I do it right!
This heroine’s clothes are timelessly simple, but her accessories are snazzy – those WOOD earrings! The scarf – another one from my current favorite Artifact., and BRONZE sneakers. The devil (or the delight) is in the details…
And a final, wild-card, painting, from the enigmatic but stunning Hilma af Klint. This painting kept coming back into my mind because I saw the colors in the four quadrants as accent colors for four seasons: pink = spring, ivory = summer, rust = autumn and grey = winter. I don’t know if that’s what she was thinking, but I like to think so!
These colors come together so well – although I have a hunch that in the dead of summer, our heroine is going to expand her “neutral white-ish” color to include white linen…
Her neutral core can be worn a few different ways, as can all of these “starter wardrobes.” And these garments will be workhorses going forward…
So these beautiful paintings are my gift to you – of course we can’t own them, but we can hold them in our hearts and minds for the rest of our lives – and to me, that’s much better!
All the love in the world to you,
my dearest friends,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago tomorrow – I saw admiring the colorful winter attire on students I saw downtown…
p.p.s. Apropos of nothing, I want to share with you how ridiculously happy I am with AKT deodorant balm. It works. Period. And you’re not left with a gloppy mess on your hands, nor are you stuck with plastic containers that you can’t recycle. I have no affiliate relationship with these guy – I just love them… I could have linked to their products at Amazon, but we know better than to buy things from the rich guy, right?

Oh boy! It’s going to be a great year on The Vivienne Files. I can’t imagine how much thought has gone into choosing six from the lovely selection of paintings we saw a wee while ago. And it’s so interesting to see the palettes, and imagine what one might do with each of them. Thank you, genius Janice, and wishing a very happy day to you and to everyone!
Abigail says
I must have missed the selection to which you refer. Can anyone tell me the date they were shown?

Wishing you, Janice, and all of your lovely followers Happy Holdays and a wonderful New Year.

These are all just beautiful. I can not wait to see how they progress. My favorite stone is labradorite, and I can’t help but feel that would fit in nicely with the Eiffel Tower! Have a Merry Christmas everyone.
Laura says
Merry Christmas Janice. Thank you for the lovely gift. I particularly like the Eiffel Tower piece as well as the surprise final painting. Best wishes to you and yours.
Angela says
Beautiful Janice. Thank you for the Christmas gift. They are all lovely paintings, but I am especially taken with the Swan. I love the idea of the 4 accent colours, something I think I could work into my current wardrobe. I look forward to seeing them all develop over the year.
Sandy b says
This is a great selection, and I clearly see some Paris influence! The pieces chosen are just right, practical and widely available. I’m very interested in the Delaunay. Can’t wait to see how navy and brown work together. It could be my new color scheme.
This is a much appreciated Christmas present, in fact it’s the first one I opened! Thank you Janice and happy holidays to everyone!
Sandy b says
And the earrings!! 😍

Merry Christmas Janice! I was so excited to open my email to find our Christmas present. You did not disappoint. I love them all but particularly smitten with street lights and Eiffel Tower. I love the greens though so I will be following along with street lights. Such fun! Thank you!

Happy Christmas to all who celebrate this day, and warm holiday wishes to all. This community of readers who care about curating classic, sustainable wardrobes and enjoy art and travel is a delightful place to be. 💙🌸🌸
This next round of paintings will be fun an intriguing. Thank you, Janice, for applying your talents and showing us a creative way to combine our love of art, color and fashion. BTW- I know I’ve said this before, but Josef Seibel shoes are so worth it. The quality endures over many years on the feet. I still have the first pair I bought around 25 years ago and add to my shoe collection whenever I spot a Josef Seibel pair in a color and style I will absolutely wear.
Kristi says
Oh, I love all the blue/green/turquoise colors I’m seeing here!! I’m the women with changing eyes from blue to green, just depends what I’m wearing so I’ll be following that one closely! Merry Christmas and thanks Janice!
Kim says
I am loving the O’Keefe and Lum paintings. Think those will be my 2 favorites of 2025. Thanks for this Christmas present. Merry Christmas, Janice!
lily says
l’m happy. Pink is my favorite color. Black is so chic. The swan motif is beautiful. Here’s to another creative year of beautiful things!
SewLibrarian says
Ha! I had to laugh at the jeans and leather sneakers comment! I never wear either of those items. Not to worry, I will adjust! I will substitute my loafers and my corduroy pants or cotton pants. That said, I’m really attracted to the O’Keeffe painting this year. Those blues and greens and the ivory are right up my alley. I probably would go more towards white in the summer, but I think those colors are fabulous together. The other wardrobes look interesting. it’s always fun to see what you do with these paintings every year. Merry Christmas and happy new year, Janice, and every one of your faithful readers.
Dee says
What a lovely email to wake up to on Christmas morning before the rest of the house awoke this morning. Thank you Janice. AlLovely selection of art and like everyone else, looking forwards to how they all progress. Have a wonderful day.
Julianna says

Pura says
Thanks for this wonderful present! This is going to be so much fun. Loving the paintings and the colors. Have a happy healthy holiday and new year.
Rebecca says
Merry Christmas Janice! This is so exciting….I can’t wait to see how things come together!
Anne says
Love them all; thank you, Janice! I wear a lot of gray and like to switch up the expected silver jewelry and accessories to gold, as you’re doing with the first painting. And the last painting is showing me the versatility of gray; I already combine it with pink (and burgundy), but oh, my, the rust is beautiful. Here’s to a fun 2025 as we watch the wardrobes grow!
Happiest of holidays!
Sue says
Thank you for these Janice…they are all exciting to look at. The one to steal my heart though is the O’Keefe. It’s a fabulous painting and your choice of colours for the accompanying palette mirrors the direction I’d decided for my wardrobe this year. 🩷 all round. Merry Christmas.
Cindy says
I totally agree, Sue. I yearn to add a bit of variety to my primarily blue wardrobe and also desire to veer from white to a softer ivory. I am excited to see how all these wardrobes progress and love the start to each of them, but the O’Keeffe is most enticing! Thank you for the wonderful gift, Janice!
Lise says
Lovely! Particularly looking forward to Streetlights wardrobe. This is my colour palette for 2025 replacing the mustard with camel.
Rike says
Wow, I like your choice.

This combination of paintings is wonderful – you chose well, Janice! -(as always 😉)
I’ve never heard to wearing navy and brown together so I’ll be particularly interested to follow the progress of the Eiffel Tower painting.

I LOVE that you didn’t link to amazon!!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I refuse to link to them – that man doesn’t need another penny of our money!
love,

Adalyn says
These paintings are stunning alone & as a collection. I can’t wait to see what you do with them and I don’t know that I can pick a favorite yet.
Julie says
Brilliant! I love this collection! Some years I don’t find anything that’s really right for me personally, so I just enjoy the beauty and creative process, and I learn so much.
THIS year there are three that feel like some version of my dream wardrobe colors. I’m so so excited!!
vicki from nz says
Same here!
rb says
Nice choices!
Chris in Indy says
My favorite is by Bertha Lum – I’m a sucker for woodblock prints, which is what this art piece appears to be. I generally lean toward shades slightly deeper than those shown in your starter wardrobe. I think the colors go nicely with both gold and silver jewelry, don’t you?
Best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy new year!
Debbie says
What a stunning selection. I excitedly showed the pictures to my husband and told him that this is going to be a great year! We then had an in-depth discussion about your capsule wardrobes and the various methods and extreme care you use in constructing them, and I told him that I felt like I had learned a lot from you. He said that it was obvious how much I was enjoying it and that he had noticed how much easier it is for me to get dressed each morning and that it’s no longer a source of stress but rather something fun that I look forward to. He is absolutely right. You’ve changed my relationship with my clothing, and it’s made my life so much easier and more enjoyable. Thank you for all that you for all of us!
Wendy says
I echo your thanks for how Janice has made mornings and dressing so much easier. It’s so intthat your husband has noticed the positive changes in your dressing routine and how you begin your days.
Wendy says
Oops…. Typo… should’ve said “it’s so interesting that your husband has noticed…”
Janice says
I am beaming…
love,
Janice
Tina says
Thank you. For me, those are the best choices you ever made. I am so much looking forward to the development of those wardrobes. Wish you all the best
Marta says
This is going to be a fun year following these fabulous choices Thanks for making it a treat to look forward to each month! I’m going to be following the Swans closely and Sun water Maine a close second My eyes are basically clear so they pick up whatever I wear. The blues and greens are great.
Moa says
Wow, stunning paintings. I could not be more excited about these coming posts. I particularly like the grey and purple alternative.
I have decided that this will be the year I follow along. (Finally!) All the other years I simply already had enough clothes. But this year I’m ready to do a bit of wardrobe refresh.
If I already have a sufficient item (for example a cardigan or bag) I will just “shop my closet.” But I will make sure to get some new stuff as well.
Is anyone else thinking of doing the same?
Mel says
This is the year for me, too. I’m jumping into unexplored waters and going with the brown and blue, colours I’ve hardly worn in years and never together. Ordered 4 items so far! Can’t wait to see what’s next!
SewLibrarian says
Moa, yes, I hope to follow along this year, and I will definitely shop my closet, but, like you, I need a refresh for some things. I really like the O’Keefe painting as inspiration.
Idajo says
A very fun selection of paintings! I’m excited to see how the wardrobes develop over the year. I’m a warm color person, so I’m loving all the warm colors I see. I’m also super pleased that only one has black as a base color. There’s so much that can be done with color, without thinking we need black with everything. Looking forward to it!
Beeper says
I am thrilled at the choice of paintings! I always love looking at the different palettes, but this year I can see myself wearing any of them, and am so excited. But since I had just purchased the teal sweater from the Bertha Lum painting two weeks ago, and already have light denim jeans and white tops, this is clearly the palette I am meant to follow this year! Can hardly wait to see what goodies are in store.
Lynne Aldridge says
Partner was looking over my shoulder as I scrolled through the paintings, saw the Johansson one & said “That’s you”. Well, yeah – aside of shades of brown from chocolate through tan & rust to burnt orange & amber, my wardrobe features many shades of green. I even MAY have too many pairs of green shoes. (Though I have my eye on some lovely M&S ballerina flats for if I genuinely have to look smart.)
Looking foward to how this expands through the year.
michelle says
Just logged on today… what a nice selection for the year! I particularly like the Pines by the Sea and Eiffel Tower palettes, most likely because they both feature denim which I wear most days.
Following along with interest..Oh, and almost forgot to mention the pretzel earrings, they’re fantastic!
Nonchi says
Oooh loads of my favourites made the cut this year. Will be so glorious to enjoy this paintings every month.
On another note we are preparing to sell our house and am thinking that a capsule / core wardrobe will be smart way to survive the 3 months of selling and buying. Bit like being pregnant but for a new home.
