Perfect for autumn:
She can take some time off this fall – what a luxury! A little photography, perhaps?
Her packing will have her blending into the forest!
It’s not her usual style, but she couldn’t resist the cardigan…
Everything else was simple. Her two orange sweaters aren’t as much alike as they seem to be; she knows she will wear them both!
She gives everything a careful “once-over” before she packs… Socks? Clean undies? Pyjamas?
The most important thing that she checks (well, not as important as underwear!) is that she has what she needs for at least a few outfits:
How many of us make it out into nature during autumn?
love,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, we packed what might be the most holiday-ish travel capsule wardrobe ever! In September…

This is exactly the type of wardrobe I’m traveling with in eastern France right now. It’s perfect for rainy autumn days. Love it!!

I was thinking that today might be the day for a wardrobe swap…. Sometimes, I wish that I could wear these colours; my husband and daughter can. This is perfect for autumnal walks in the woods. We have beech woods near us that turn the most vivid shades of orange and yellow. I love muted tones of the bracelet, autumnal cardigan, the scarf and earrings. Perhaps I could sub the orange/rust for burgundy/berry and the olive green for teal green? At least I do have brown/taupe trousers. I have many patterned tops but do like patterned cardigans/jumpers.
It is such wild weather at the moment. If it ever stops raining in southern England, we might chance a walk in the woods, albeit muddy. In my locality, we have had a month-worth of rain in the past week; in the hills just north of my town, they have had nearly four months of rain in a week, causing widespread flooding. Last week giant redwood in a small plantation near us exploded when it was struck by lightning. Thinking of you folk in Florida bearing the brunt of the Hurricane Helene – stay safe.

I love this sweater in a kitschy sort of way…it’s truly fun for Fall. Sometimes a little kitsch can bring smiles! The colors in it are just yummy. For those of us, like me, old enough to remember when all sweaters were kitschy in the late 80’s and early ’90’s, it might seem a bit off putting at first, given that we had to train ourselves away from this vibe. However, in 2024, I think it’s just plain adorable.
Janice says
At least it’s not an ugly Christmas sweater! That whole project is just irritating to me – you should NEVER own a garment that you wear once or twice a year…
big hugs,
Janice

Yes! I agree so, so much. My tactic for Christmas is adding a holly brooch or other fun (inexpensive) brooch to the usual nice cardigans, blazers and tops. I confess to owning one cotton turtleneck from Talbots with a holly print… gets worn from the day after Christmas until Dec 31st—- and it is 26 years old!
Janice says
I can easily forgive something like your turtleneck – I know someone who wears a sweater that makes her look like Santa, complete with the belt! And she has worn it for decades… We should be thinking about buying clothes that we can wear for our entire lives. My mother had things that she had for as long as I can remember, and THAT’S the way things should be worn. In my humble opinion. We need to think of the planet…
hugs,
Janice

I had never worn Christmas knitwear until I bought vintage Christmas cardigan. It’s red with black velvet collar, cuffs and welt. The front is scattered with beaded/embroidered holly sprigs. On the cuffs and welt are embroidered and beaded Cardinal birds. The invisible zip fastening is chic. I wear it to any seasonal occasion from 1 December to Christmas Eve. It is stylish and unusual.

That cardigan is gorgeous!
Have a good weekend!

That first cardigan made me smile. I love this entire wardrobe. I’m sitting here trying to decide if I should wear the teal outfit I laid out for today (because it’s house colors day and my house color is teal) or say the heck with it and go with something more autumnal. Have a great day and wonderful weekend ladies.

Janice,
Love it, though instead of two orange-ish sweaters, I might have subbed in a green one to replace one of the orange ones .
Deb says
Ahh! My type of autumn wardrobe. These colors call to me. And, surprisingly, I really am drawn to that Cider cardigan. With slight tweaks (swapping one of the orange sweaters for an orange tee since I tend to run warm rather that cold, and adding a green skirt), I could wear this wardrobe through the fall months.

Janice, Not only is this a beautiful mini-wardrobe, when looking back at all of your archived capsules and fashions, it’s amazing how 99% of your clothing selections, even from 10 years ago, “stand the test of time”, and would still be stylish today. You repeatedly demonstrate to your loyal readers how classic clothing selections “stand the test of time”. Thank you for your continued work on our behalf!!
I’m currently on a 15-day cruise with carry-on only thanks to your capsule fashion guidance over the years!

This is me. I already had my eye on the sienna color sweater from Bean. Sienna/vermillion is my favorite color, followed by green. Someone mentioned patterned sweaters from the 80s/90s. I still have and love mine. Natural linen yarn with embroidered fall tone florals. LLBean.

I also think the first sweater is just so cute. I would wear it and figure out how to make it work in my navy based wardrobe. Many years ago I had a button up knitted sweater vest in a cool beige color with various colors of leaves applicaqued and high lighted with a few beads and sequins. Not over the top. My daughters called it a school teacher outfit. Vests went out of style and I quit wearing it. Today, I’m kicking myself for donating it. Live and Learn! Keep what you like, the old fashion wheel does come back around.

I love this palette! These are my favorite colors! Just love the way you put things together.
Thank you so much.

Thank you! I’m so scrambled these days – kind words go a long way!

This cardigan is absolutely perfect- a lot of charm and it will bring mileage to anyone whose closet is filled with these colors. I also love that coffee bean vest… very tempting for its function and nice in a city where outdoor recreation is the main pastime. I really think it goes from the hiking trail to downtown lunch. The squirrel earrings are the perfect touch of whimsy.
AK says
Oooh.. gotta add that when I checked out the vest at LL Bean, I spotted a waxed field jacket in the same coffee bean color. It’s really gorgeous if you do a lot of winter walking.

Maple leaves and squirrels…could be very Canadian!

How exciting to see your post today. These accessories are just delightful, and those earrings just make me smile. Beautiful fall colours and lovely capsule. Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
Pepper from Minnesota says
LOL! The squirrel earrings remind me of how the chubbiest squirrel I’ve seen all year was running back and forth in the road yesterday morning trying to decide which way was safe to cross. I sat there for a solid two minutes waiting for it finally figure out where it needed to go while people kept going by on the other side of the street. He finally decided to how it for my yard, and when I pulled in I found him in the maple tree beside my driveway, chittering away.

I love squirrel watching! They are just such funny little creatures. We have a couple of walnut trees and of course the squirrels love them. We also have dogs, and one particularly bold squirrel will sit up in the tree and taunt the bigger dog, then throw walnuts at him. They never go very far or hit him (tiny squirrel arms…), but the whole exchange is hilarious! 😂

I love that your mother had things for so long! I hope that my children will say the same about me. It is hard to find things these days that might last for 20 years, but I am confident it can be done!
Maria says
Oh, these are my colors.
But here I need a rain jacket to go on autumn walks. Other than that, I love everything about it.
The accessories are once again very lovingly selected and perfect for it.
Wendy says
This wardrobe has me wishing my complexion worked with a Fall colour palette. The cardigan’s colours are scrumptious and I love the winsome earring designs.
Mary B says
The fall colors are so beautiful – rich and warm – and I really wish they suited me. This is just a lovely wardrobe for someone who likes to spend time outdoors! I think I’m going to see what other colors the vest comes in… 🤔
