While some of us are loyal to the color palettes given to us – sometimes years ago – by color consultants, some of us are out there experimenting…
This scarf inspires experimentation:
At first, I thought I would tackle something with the light blue background – faded denim and chambray would both be ideal.
But then I really focused on the juxtaposition of black with the warm gold, green and orange creatures on this most whimsical of scarves:
Our heroine, who has a fondness for lacy and textured cardigans, is off and running!
Her wardrobe has many of the same classic black garments as that of her friend from Friday’s post, but things look very different with these colors!
Even though the cardigans are similar, the range of colors makes things look much different!
Yes, she already has a green cardigan, but this one is more textured, rather than lacy, and quite a few shades darker too:
If this heroine was planning a trip, this would be her travel wardrobe – I think this looks so appealing:
The ways in which these garments can be worn are pretty easy to picture, but let’s look, just to be sure that we’re not missing anything important.
it can happen – I once traveled with ONE pair of socks…
Why not mix accent colors? It’s not right for every day, or for every activity, but sometimes it’s a fun option:
Between Friday’s post and today’s, it’s clear that a good core of neutral clothes can take on really different looks depending on your choice of accent colors. It’s obvious, but easily forgotten…
do you get the clear message that I’m forgetting LOTS of things these days?
love,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, I shared with you “The Lost Art of Dressing” by Linda Przybyszewski – a look into why nobody knows anything about quality clothing these days. It’s on my “re-read” list…

Gorgeous colours with the black. Strong & bold. Citrus colours. Love the shoes.
I wear two accents together especially if they are analogous colours like the yellow & orange or yellow & green.
Possibly add more tops to go under the great cardigans.
I think there is a body of thought that says black is a cool colour but I regard black as no colour and so is neither warm nor cool.

Like with all neutrals it depends on the undertones of the black. I’ve seen ones with a faint but noticeable undertone of every color in the rainbow. The ones that have blue, purple and green undertones seem cooler. The ones with a red, orange or yellow undertone seem warmer. It’s so very rare to find a black that is just plain black.
Just like with whites. They all have such a range of hints of color that it’s almost impossible to match them without dye lot matching. And who can really bother being that picky! lol.
So I think in the end it just depends on if you like how a particular item harmonizes with another.

This might be my favorite group in quite a long time. I do wear a fair amount of black, but am a ‘warm tones’ wearer for my colors. I’m always mindful of orange and black because it’s too Halloween, but I love orange, so it’s a conundrum. That being said, these other warm tones just add that same punch. Well done, you!

Love these colors, especially the coral. I’ve been using orange as an accent for a couple of years now – just scarves and shoes mainly, one sweater. This coral is so very pretty I could be tempted to buy it for spring/summer wear vs the more pumpkin shade of my other one. Wonderful way to start the week, though I do have today off for Memorial Day. Have a lovely day everyone

Not one of these is in my color palette, but I can certainly appreciate your choices here! Really like the green pointelle cardigan. And all the shoes.

Beautiful wardrobe! I read your blog religiously, but don’t comment. Today your links lead me to a Memorial day sale and I was able to stock up on tank tops – thanks!

Thank you! Those little commissions keep my lights turned on!

Thank you! I love this idea of blending black with what is essentially the colors I wear most frequently. Wonderful inspiration!

Janice,
I’m loving these accent colored items , especially that lacy green cardigan ! Though my neutrals here would be stone and chocolate brown instead of black .
vicki from nz says
Shrebee, that’s exactly what I was thinking !

Love love love!! These colors!! I might just have to spring for that scarf. Sigh…

I love these colors (although they aren’t mine) and the bugs on the scarf are so cool! Those hats!! What a treat… now I’m off to see what other colors some things are available in. :)

This would look fabulous on the person with the right coloring and a love of beetles. I missed the 2014 post (hectic and sad time in my life), so I’m looking forward to reading the book. My thoughts: clothes were more expensive, but better made (in the US by Union labor), so women bought more carefully. Also, stores received shipments fewer times per year. There wasn’t pressure to sell more and more items to clear the sales floor every two or three weeks. Finally, clerks knew their customers. My mother had a sales lady in the 1940’s who called her when certain items came into the store. She knew my mother’s style. (And my mother wasn’t rich. She was a legal secretary living at home.) I believe all these factors contributed as well as home economics classes and more general knowledge of sewing.

This is such a simple way of dressing.
These aren’t my accent colours but I do love lacy knits and pointelle for summer. I would swap black for dark blue and my accents would be shades of pink, purple, blue, light grey and teal. This wardrobe style could easily be adapted for cool weather using thicker materials. I would then add burgundy and dark grey to the mix.

I could live in your wardrobe I think! Those are all of my colors as well :-)

I solidly fit in the autumn coloring category. So this color scheme is right up my alley. And I love it! I was prepared to not really like them paired with black but you’ve done such a good job of picking lovely pieces. I like the outfits so much more than i expected! Being a color lover, black can feel like such a cop-out to me! Lol! But these are so nice! Well done!
