It was love at first sight, for the scarf…
And it had been love at first sight for her when she saw her sweetheart, too…
Over breakfast…
“I learned the oddest thing the other day…”
she’s still a little bit sleepy…
“What was that?”
“Remember that weird guy at the beach bar – the one we liked so much? Well, he’s qualified to officiate over weddings!”
she’s gobsmacked that this guy is qualified to do much of anything except tell amazing stories, and make time fly because he’s so entertaining…
“Well, I wasn’t expecting THAT…”
“Why don’t we run up this weekend and get married?”
okay, she’s awake now!
“After all these years? Are you sure?”
we shall draw a discreet curtain over the rest of this conversation…
She’s been asked to wear lots of pink – it’s always been a favorite of her sweetie, and it’s pretty suitable for an outdoor, impromptu wedding between a couple of… not kids…
So easy to pack… they might very well get married wearing shorts!
She feels just a touch giddy. Just a touch, but it’s still pretty nice…
It’s far from the first thing on her mind, but she checks her outfit possibilities; borrowing clothes from her new spouse might be fun, but she’d like to avoid it. Just this once!
She plans to tie her scarf around her hat much of the time…
Yes, there are place where you can get a license and get married immediately…
love,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, we were packing for warm weather travel in a palette of navy and coral!

Does she have something old something new something borrowed? I don’t see blue.
I only ever learned this phrase and its meaning from watching lunchtime soap operas with my mom in elementary school when we could walk home and back for lunch! We had a whole hour. I watched the ABC soap operas and ate peanut butter and jelly.
Janice says
knowing her, she will borrow a blue handkerchief from her spouse-to-be!

Janice

…and a six pence in her shoe.
My mother actually got one for me minted in my birth year (1960) when I got married in 1998 (late bloomer).
Janice says
I was born in 1960 and got married in 2004. I prefer to think of us as fully ripe and ready!

What a lovely story, Janice, and such a pretty scarf and capsule. I love it :-)
AK says
Absolutely beautiful!
Book Goddess says
When I first looked at the scarf, I envisioned the wardrobe very differently. With my coloring, I would have emphasized the brighter shades of violet, pink, and green, with white as a neutral.
Maybe you could do a second post showing how the same scarf could inspire someone to a brighter wardrobe.
Janice says
I thought about that, and looked about for violet and green, and didn’t have a lot of luck finding things! So I wandered into the world of pink, and our heroine showed up (in my mind) and away we went!
But you’re right, there are tons of possibilities with this scarf – it’s very beautiful…
hugs,
Janice

Such a sweet story; it great fuel for daydreaming. 💕
I love the delicate pink and muted florals. It’s feminine without being saccharine-sweet.
Dame Eleanor Hull says
I hope they’ve thought through the legal and financial implications of marriage. I am in general very pro-marriage because it provides protections that otherwise need to be spelled out in other kinds of legal agreements, and I am deeply enamoured of the legal fiction of “next of kin” (I would so much rather have Sir John making decisions on my behalf than anyone to whom I am related by blood), but especially with older couples who have previous connections/families, or where there is an income disparity, marriage can have unintended consequences.
And if they do have all those other documents in place, and have some principled objection to marriage as an institution, then why . . . ? I’m sorry, I think I read too many mysteries/ blogs about mystery novels, and I’m spinning a whole sinister back-story in my head: he needs her to be able not to testify against him in court, or something!
Pepper from Minnesota says
LOL! I love your way of thinking, Dame Eleanor. That really would be a cozy mystery to snuggle up with one afternoon.
Sally in St Paul says
Beneath the veneer of romance lies something darker…I would read this book.
Pepper from Minnesota says
Ohh this is SUCH a lovely capsule! I could live in just this for weeks I think. And the story is so sweet. Thank you for a wonderful wake up/coffee companion this morning!
Helen says
Wow! So beautiful 😍
I can not wear that shade of pink because, I’m told, it’s too close to my skin tone and so it washes me out . . . But this is so beautiful. I’m tempted to get that scarf just so I can look at it all day. Thank you for sharing your amazing eye and creativity with us, Janice!
Kate says
I have that same problem… I adore that shade of pink and it looks terrible on me, no matter how many times I try it on. But this collection is gorgeous.
Sheila says
Very lovely, and so romantic…. thank you Janice!
Amanda Hudson says
What a beautiful scarf and yes my mind immediately went to the more vibrant colors. But this is just lovely. I went to the look back and then as so often happens I looked at another post. The one from March 29, 2014. Great food for thought on how many clothes we have. I’m going to try harder!!!
Dee says
What a beautiful scarf and lovely story to go with it. So enjoyable with morning coffee. I agree with some of the others, would have liked to see a few brighter colours added in.

I hope Sweetie tucks her into a beautiful vintage Bentley or Rolls Royse to protect all that pastel perfection during travel. With the scarf tying back her hair. Janice, I did not know I had any romance left in my soul until this! And I’m feeling sure he has a blue handkerchief tucked away in a white satin box. Thanks for a morning treasure. I almost deleted as soon as I saw all the white. So glad I popped in.

I love this scarf and your color palette. I’d love to see an expanded wardrobe! Very sweet story for springtime.
Debra Indy says
The white and pink is perfect for a wedding weekend. Maybe peridot and/or amethyst jewelry to add the other accent colors?
On another note…what is your inspiration for these stories? Real people? Something you’ve read? Obviously, you have a great imagination to take inspiration in different directions.

What a beautiful story
and pretty capsule.
I’ve been really liking this series recently.
We’re about to have a fiftieth birthday and wedding weekend at a castle
and invited to a communion next week…
I have a blouse with watercolor flowers, similar to the scarf
I want to wear. Oh, he’s so pretty and puts you in a good mood.
Alex West says
I love it.

One word to describe this – delectable! Lovely story. The scarf has bright colours and pretty pastels so this can go either way. I would have included a green top for variety. Tiered skirts have been my favourite style for summer since the 1970’s!
I was browsing the shops yesterday and I walked past the beachwear (yes it’s in the shops). I noticed this gorgeous long lacy cotton dress and a matching long lacy jacket. It crossed my mind that this would look lovely for a beach wedding.
Janice says
I looked high and low for the best shades of lavender and green, and just didn’t see anything that blended as well as I insist. Normal life would be more flexible than I am – things have to match pretty perfectly if I’m going to put it on an image that you’re going to view on a phone…
hugs
Janice

There is an interesting discussion to be had about whether we prefer to precisely match or blend the colours we wear. I’m happy for colours to blend or tone whilst my daughter likes things to match precisely.
I can appreciate why it’s good to match, though we all see colours differently and there’s no accounting for the differences between mobile and computer screen resolutions.

I love this post. I live in Australia and would love to see your autumn and winter ideas.

Its a pretty scarf and a pretty wardrobe but… She wants to get married in a dress. A pretty, floaty, pink dress. Trust me on this. I almost got married in a suit. I don’t know what I was thinking.

Dame Eleanore, I like the way you added the mystery aspect…perhaps he plans to take out life ins on her and then after a year, she has a tragic fall from a boat? Horse? Seaside cliff? Thanks for getting my brain going down a dark novel road. All mystery fun aside, this was lovely. Too pink for me, but if the pink were swapped for any nearly white pale colour of blueish violet or green or yellow, I could see it.
