She loves this painting – it’s what she does, in a way…
So when she travels – which is often – she uses these colors as her palette for assembling her travel capsule wardrobe:
Another Gala Opening Night
She designs the flowers that lurk around on all of the occasional tables, grace all of the dining tables, and fill in the odd spaces around the museum…
She doesn’t actually arrange the flowers – the local florists take care of that…
But she has spent the last 2 or 3 months designing the arrangements – making sure to use flowers and plants that are in some way symbolically associated with the theme of the current fete…
For example – her current work is at an exhibit of Grecian art, so she’s including lots of Acanthus…
She just lurks around, mostly. She makes sure that all of the arrangements are placed properly, that they don’t unexpectedly block something important – like views!
Mostly, she just ensures that everything is executed in the way that she imagined it would be, when she started planning for this evening.
She loves plants, and floral arrangements. She loves art. And she REALLY loves people watching at these events…
Sounds like a perfect job for her, I’d say!
love,
Janice
p.s. Six years ago, our heroine used William Morris wallpaper to inspire her summer vacation wardrobe!

Another gorgeous post. I love these colours so much.
Maybe it’s just me but I can see your two most recent posts on my phone but not on my laptop.
Have a great day!

How peculiar…I can see them on my laptop but NOT my phone!!

Gosh, although this is close to my own color palette, I liked Monday’s better! jheesh. For some reason I don’t feel like the green “fits”? I don’t know why. Something to think about. My husband patiently sat through my explanation yesterday on how I track cost per wear of my clothes to guide my buying decisions. His only comment “girls are weird”. Thank you Janice.

Sheila, I can relate! Only I don’t so much have the patient listening, lol.
And sometimes I am annoyed by how little effort can be put into a man’s wardrobe, and it looks just fine. A man can buy all his casual clothes at Costco and look none the worse. And a dilemma over accent colors? No such thing. Lol
I suppose I could do it too but it wouldn’t be as fun.
Also, loving this little series. I learn from each one.

Just thinking out loud here: Maybe men’s wardrobes take less effort because they are so heavy on the (usually) dark neutrals and their choices for accent colours are more limited than women’s clothing. Their uniform is simpler too and has fewer elements.

🤣🤣🤣 Not as weird as blokes who insist on wearing clothes that are worn out whilst new clothes often bought by partners and mothers lie languishing pristine in their drawers. “Plenty of life left in this” is their cry as a button falls off, the seams split and the collars fray….
anita says
beth t, your comment made me laugh cuz
it’s. so. true.
My husband has clothes from his single days, and we’ve been married 32 years next week. He’s honestly bewildered by my suggestions to toss things.
Raj says
So, true! 😁😁😁
Lily says
Oh, man… My husband never buys new clothes because “I just ruin them anyway”. He once went to a party, straight from working on his motorcycle, in a greasy tee shirt. People have commented on our radically different presentations. I never, ever, ask his opinion on clothes! I am on the verge of chucking his whole wardrobe.

Today’s inspired painting is lovely and so is the wardrobe. Injecting the sienna/ butterscotch items really adds depth. The green is wonderful too.
I can’t help but think that navy could replace the black items and it would all still hang together well.
The look back post is great fun and the fresh blue wardrobe is calling my name. I especially love the whimsy of including the apron, pot holders, measuring spoons and the beach towel/blanket in the wardrobe.

I agree with your idea of replacing the black with navy…I always mentally replace navy with black!!! An easy switch and it changes very little of the rest of the wardrobe.
Raj says
Unbelievable, Janice! You keep getting better and better, every day. Now you have the beautiful colour Green with the Classic Brown, Black, and Ivory travel wardrobe.
There is no other word for this, but “Excellent”.
Cindy says
The “look back” is perfect! All your posts are, but that one from colors to style is totally me. I just wish all the items could still be purchased.

I’m thinking of a similar palette for a trip to Italy in October. I might switch the white for a dusty pink, one of my favorite colors.
Natalie says
I love this. This is almost exactly my color palette I’m using for an upcoming trip, but i’m replacing the black with dark brown and lightening the whole look up a bit as it will be hot

This is a perfect formula. If I added a skirt, dress and a print top it becomes the perfect seasonal capsule wardrobe for me with over 30 days of different outfit combinations. Love it!
Sally in St Paul says
I love the green, black, and ivory in this capsule, but I’m not fond of the warm brown with the other colors (esp. with the green but also the black). I’m not sure if it’s the predominance of the brown in the wardrobe, the very very warm tone of the color, or something else that isn’t working for me. I might like a cooler brown better, but I’d tweak this for myself by ramping up the green and substituting chambray/denim for the brown. The jade bracelet and fern hair scarf are stand-outs for me in this grouping. I also really like the white/pink floral hair scarf available if you click through to the website; they have four different prints available in various colorways.

Sally, after reading your comments, I went back up and looked. For me, I thought it was the green that didn’t feel right. That being said, you are correct, and if you took the brown out I think the green would be fine. So maybe it’s just that the brown and green don’t fit together?? And that’s the reason my closet isn’t quite as cohesive as I might like it to be!
I still really like Monday’s wardrobe though!

I’d love to see the William Morris looks!!!

Janice,
It’s a lovely 9 piece “ slot machine” format ! I would have to sub out the black for dark brown or navy , as someone else mentioned . Counting the butterscotch color as a neutral , I see 3 neutral bottoms in light, medium and dark, 2 twin sets , including the accent color, and two matching “2 fers” of matching pants and tops . I can’t help but analyze the thinking that has gone into the interpretation of the painting . As always, great job !

I have spent yesterday pulling together wardrobe pieces for the last two posts by Janice for the Brown, Ivory, and Black colour wheel. And the Green Accent Colour. I am amazed. I came up with 58 clothing pieces, including jackets. Twelve pairs of shoes and boots for the colour scheme. And scarves in black and ivory with a green , black, and ivory scarf. I am way over the 33 piece wardrobe per season mark . I guess this will be a years worth of the Common Wardrobe. Whew! 🙂

I have a ‘mini capsule’ in these colours with white instead of the ivory. I generally swing to navy/light blue/white/pink but that rusty colour works with navy and chambray. The sage-y green is a bit of an outlier but I like variety. It works with the rust and also white so I am here for it!
Kari says
I too love the green and ivory. The brown is lovely with ivory, but not with this green. I would swap the black for an indigo and lighten the brown to something that works with the green just a bit better. Oh and add 3 items in a paler version of the green. For jewelry, it would be gold and green. Shoes either ivory or a nude tone. Scarves and handbags in gold, ivory, indigo, green. This one really made me think hard because with the exception of the black, the colours are where my wardrobe is going. Granted, I have a range of yellows too. Thank you Janice.

I enjoy coming here if only for the heartfelt and friendly discussions on greens, browns, and everything in between. I agree with Raj’s comment that Janice’s skill at putting these things together has gotten only better with time.
Lora says
Do you think you could make this work with dark gray or navy instead of black?
Janice says
Absolutely! Any wardrobe can be altered to different colors; this one is particularly well suited to a different “dark neutral.”
hugs,
Janice
