This upcoming season promises “limit of heat,” which would be welcome in much of the world!
If you love red and black, you will soon be able to bundle up, and include your favorite witch scarf! (note that if you fold this scarf at all, nobody will be able to see the witch; but if you wear it somewhat like a cape, she will be visible in all her amusing glory!)
If you struggle to find a scarf that you love, don’t forget to check the men’s departments. I don’t know WHY some scarves are strictly for men, and others for women; men’s are often less expensive, and can be very beautiful!
Early autumn, when the trees are beautiful, and the leaves are still MOSTLY on the trees and not on the ground!
I really love this scarf – I suspect you’re going to see it all the time!
And I’m showing 2 scarves with each outfit to offer you choices, NOT to suggest that you should wear 2 scarves at a time. Although, if you can figure out a way to do it, don’t let me stop you…
Those among us who wear pastels can still wear beautiful sweaters and scarves in the autumn…
I could be happy sitting under this tree for a couple of hours and reading some philosophy – what would you be reading?
I love this sunflower scarf too – if you love autumn colors, this could be very versatile…
Maybe you want to stand out in an autumn crowd – light blue will definitely do it!
Don’t forget to visit your favorite farmers’ market frequently this time of year – in February, you’ll be wishing it was still available!
What’s your favorite food this time of year? I’m always eager for a good panzanella – bread and tomato salad. Belovedest makes THE BEST version…
love
Janice
p.s. Just 2 years ago, someone asked me if they should indulge in a fun pastel print scarf; the answer was a definitely yes!

OMG you really hit it out of the park for me today – fall is my very favorite time of year. I love the photos, I love the outfits. WOW. The Pied Piper scarf is enough to tempt me to try (again) a silk square scarf which I typically stay away from as I’ve never mastered the art of tying them. And DANG my self imposed ban on adding more purple. And that sunflower scarf would also totally work with my closet. Sigh….. Why oh why do you tempt me so? Have a great weekend everyone!

Reading material would be urban fantasy – I do love my escapism. Food? Anything pumpkin!

Under the tree, I would be reading historical fiction. My favorite food this time of year is dragon fruit. I’m eating it daily.

A+ today. Love the idea of showing 2 scarves for a choice. Crazy me would show a blouse and purse with the outfits too and maybe a skirt. Guess that would defeat the idea of minimal though. Hmm using 2 at a time. One in the hair as a headband and the other on a purse? Reading material might be mystery, biography, classic novel or history. Totally love the ivory, green and the pale blue. So much temptation.

I have followed you for several years now and often am inspired to combine colors of garments that I already own. I especially like all the scarves you feature. I have been a “scarf person” ever since my dad bought me a green scarf to wear with a brown suit. He really knew color and was often described as dapper. I love, and own several, scarves from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They were splurges, for sure. Recently I was looking for a warm scarf that would combine red, black and gray for an upcoming trip. I discovered a Scottish business: The House of Bruar. They had ONE lambs wool scarf on clearance that was exactly what I wanted. Even with international shipping it was only about $50. If you are not familiar with this website, check it out. Their clothes are beautiful and their sales are wonderful.

For fall, the olive + rust + plaid scarf combo is so perfect…and I can create it from my current closet. The oatmeal + grey combo is a bit too neutral for me (though the Pied Paper scarf would add some color) but I really like it! I think these particular colors work beautifully together. Sweater + scarf season is pretty much my favorite.

I love fall! LLBean flannel shirts are a fall go-to for me. I wear them on their own, with a tee shirt underneath or a vest or sweater over top. When you see one you like on their site, you’ve got to grab it before your size disappears though (through Janice’s LLBean link, of course). They get softer with age.
I like to eat acorn squash cut in half and cooked with butter in the center as fall approaches. I would be reading history under the tree while sipping a pumpkin spice latte.

Beautiful sweaters! I live in Aotearoa New Zealand, and we are in our last two weeks of winter, so sweater-wearing is nearly over. But in my retirement, I have resurrected a knitting hobby, and am planning on knitting a cabled sweater for next winter. So it’s great to see sweater pictures in different colours. Janice, I’ve been reading TVF for about six months, and I really appreciate seeing the clothes not on a model. It’s so much easier to assess how it might look on oneself. I also really love all your work with colour. It got me thinking about combinations I hadn’t previously thought about. And the idea of starting with neutrals has been so helpful in re-jigging my wardrobe from primarily workwear to more casual with fewer items. Thank you :)

Dear Vicki,
Are you an All Blacks fan? I’m a big Ireland rugby fan…
Thanks for being here with us – I don’t like to see clothes on models either; it makes finding things for The Vivienne Files a LOT harder, but worthwhile.
hugs,
Janice

hi Janice, I used to be a keen rugby follower, not so much now, but I do watch the interesting international series, and of course the World Cup. Always watch the ABs against the Irish (my mother-in-law was Irish). Your team totally deserved the recent series win, there’s no doubt about that! Here, everyone is all “off with his head” about the coach, which is an unfair response, I think. It’ll be good for us to self-reflect :) And also, while we played poorly, that’s not the only reason we lost, for sure. The Irish team was a joy to watch, and I’m sure an even greater joy for you :) Bring on the World Cup, eh? Nga mihi, Vicki

Such beautiful scarves! The classic look of a nice sweater & cords or another pant with a scarf & loafers is so appealing.

I’m loving blues & greens for fall and winter- periwinkle denim tones into indigo and navy. Accented with cranberry, olive, forest, teal, & celadon, paired with winter white, greys and black.
Cranberry with navy, amber jewelry with denim blues, all the greens with black – it’s seasonal without too much of the autumn leaf tones which I can’t wear.
