Time flies when the weather is lovely!
These Are NOT Gardening Clothes…
These are sitting on the back porch admiring your garden clothes…
These are clothes for walking around your neighborhood, admiring other gardens…
These are clothes to wear while sitting on the porch swing, discussing how many raised garden beds you can fit on your lot…
These are clothes to wear when you’re watching your friends and family play sports…
These are clothes for the backyard barbecue, picnic, fire pit, marshmallow toasting…
These are clothes for sitting under the trees, snipping the ends off of green beans…
These are clothes to wear when taking baskets of fresh vegetables to your neighbors…
These are the clothes that you buy that give you enough clothes for summer, so that you can promote four of your favorite old pieces of clothing to the esteemed position of GARDENING CLOTHES.
You have to earn that title…
Just as you have to earn the fruits and vegetables!
love,
Janice
p.s. Five years ago, our heroine was visiting a very WEIRD (but true to life!) beach house, with a wardrobe of navy and white with turquoise and purple…

My clothes for visiting gardens always include a floral element – usually a top, sometimes a floral skirt/dress or a floral cardigan. My gardening clothes are disreputable – only to be seen in my garden. They comprise an old hoodie, tee shirts and trackies, now covered in green paint from painting the fence last summer. I wear better looking clothes for local environmental conservation work!

What a lovely display of colourful clothes and very apt as I want to buy a new small capsule for the summer as I need to relegate some of my older clothes for tending my newly acquired allotment.
I’m not a gardener (unlike my husband), so i’ts been quite the learning curve, but I’ve already harvested my early summer salad crop with great results and my herb garden is flourishing with abundance. I now need to find new ways of cooking in order to make best use of it all.

Lovely capsules. Partial to the French Blue as I’ve adopted that color this spring. In fact, wearing a long sleeved linen shirt in French Blue over a yellow/white striped tshirt today for work. That Sea Holly scarf is amazing.

Nothing beats a beautiful floral skirt in summer! Beautiful collections! Now, shall we all discuss the meaning of grain in ear?

Each “these are clothes for…” statement is delightful and makes me want to instantly wear those lovely summery colours and DO the activities you described.

Today the cheerful apple green and bright pink accent colors are making me smile!

ak, I think ‘Grain in the ear” means that the grain is ready to harvest and the ear is like an ear of corn. And I am all about a floral skirt or shorts to celebrate summer, too!

Loved all these combinations… I’m now reliving my childhood of snipping green beans for my mom and aunts while sitting on the porch steps. I started looking at the Talbot’s scarves from the link and just in case anyone wanted to know the scarves are all buy one get one half off right now. Now it’s time to get my grubby clothes on and do a little painting and wedding. I am getting the flower beds ready for my daughters graduation party. I recently went through my closet and took out some clothes that were starting to show wear but are still my style/colors so that if someone were to see me working I don’t look like a total slob. (which is previously how I dressed for working!) I feel a lot better working outside now.

Hi Janice and Everyone! I like the summer situational capsules, esp the ‘sitting out back and admiring the garden.’ I have to remind myself to do that.
My childhood friend and I have attended the Open Garden walks in Buffalo for the past 7 summers and I think I have worn a tank top and shorts each time due to the heat and humidity. No fashionable scarves for me. Maybe this year I will be brave and wear a skirt (maybe.)
Now for those who may think ‘gardens’ and ‘Buffalo’ are incompatible , please visit the website
https://www.gardensbuffaloniagara.com/open-gardens-buffalo . We are always amazed at what some homeowners can do with the smallest piece of property in the most unexpected location to create the most unique and awe-inspiring wonders 🌷.

I love this entire post

This post captures my fantasy summer perfectly! My actual summer plans are a little less … romantic, shall we say. Thank you for my smile for the day.

Janice,
Yes, yes, yes ! Summer feelings personified ! Wonderful post ! Despite two years of ultra stringent measures, I am sitting here, healing from some relatively mild symptoms of Covid while in 10 days quarantine ! I live in a senior residential community ,which has more stringent guidelines than the CDC. In fact, if the CDC did have stronger guidelines, I would not have been exposed to a recently infected family member ! What I am watching right now are my darned weeds growing with absolutely no consideration for my current limitations ! But —- next week is coming !
Kristi says
I’m so sorry you are dealing with Covid! I missed the end of school last year and most of January this year because of Covid. I hope you can get back in your garden next week.

Love this SO MUCH! Gardening is my day job, and I always am feeling the need to walk that fine line between rolling up my sleeves and getting dirty, and looking attractive while doing demonstrations for clients or harvesting for customers. There’s an element of charm that means so much to people when they are looking for fresh produce or inspiration to start their own gardens. That Boden set with the printed skirt and shorts is just right!

Janice, this is really nice. Thank you. You do SO much hard work that I hate to suggest another topic…but…sometimes I think of my lipcolour as an accessory & reach for that instead of a scarf, etc. Would you consider adding a lipcolour to your accessory posts just as you would a watch or bag? I have more lippy tubes than I feel comfortable admitting…today alone, my bag has 10 tubes in it…all reds. How can we apply your lessons on accessories to our lip colour? Thank you again for ALL your wisdom. By the way…I am wearing a scarf today because of your guidance and feel more pulled together than I have in several days.

These clothes are absolutely lovely! I adore the images you paint in my mind, sitting under the shade of a tree, wearing ANY of these beautiful ensembles, and enjoying life. I particularly like that “neon mango” tee, and those printed shorts and pants with the pink tops! Thank you for another incredible post and example on how such elegant and basic silhouettes can look so chic.
