Sunday is World Down Syndrome Day – and wearing snazzy socks is one way that they suggest we observe the day! The thinking is that when someone comments on your witty or eye-catching socks, you can talk to them about Down Syndrome…
I can run with this idea!
This is a great time of year to treat oneself to something fun, pretty, and still practical. At least in Chicago, we’re not wearing Spring clothes, and our winter things are looking tired… A bit of color might be a great little splurge!
Honestly, Talbots has the best accessories…
Maybe you’re in the mood for butterflies?
Even the seriously achromatic among us can have some fun:
Maybe you’re craving the great outdoors? Your socks can signal your desires!
Hearts are NOT limited to February! And who couldn’t appreciate these earrings – hearts AND eternity…
Maybe you’re just in the mood for red! Sriracha socks for your favorite hot food fan?
If you haven’t seen a blue sky in a LONG time, you could bring your own blue into your wardrobe:
These next pieces feel very much like spring to me!
If you love maroon, you’re in luck! It’s not every day that you can match a bracelet to your socks:
And it wouldn’t be me writing this if there wasn’t at least some pink included:
Is there a day that wouldn’t be better while wearing taco socks?
love,
Janice
p.s. Just 2 years ago we pondered 10 ways to wear a blue dress; if you’re thinking of getting a new dress for Spring, this might be a good reference!

Cute, but I doubt any of them would fit me as ladies socks usually too out at 2 sizes too small for me.
Zaidie Brown says
Same here. Shoes are almost as bad too.
I’ve found bamboo socks have a lot of give in them if you want feminine socks.

Men’s dress socks come in fun patterns too. This store doesn’t seem to carry a lot of floral or pastels, but a lot that are perfectly unisex. Also, their women’s socks come in sizes 9-11 or 10-13. https://www.happysocks.com/us/socks-underwear-for-men

Cute post – and I appreciate the motivation! I particularly loved the lookback post with its fabulous outfits and variety of color pairings.

I love novelty socks. Typically I wear stripes, but this has inspired me! Personally I prefer knee socks – I don’t know, I find crew socks uncomfortable and like they’re always too short. I do have some Bob Ross crew socks I sometimes wear to bed. :) Happy Friday everyone!
Sheila says
Appreciate your including masks!

You had me at the sox!!

Hi Janice and Everyone! You know, I was just thinking today ‘wouldn’t it be nice to find funky ankle sox for summer-? ‘ Yes, I would wear siracha sox with my sneakers if they were 100% cotton. (I do draw the line at wearing sox with sandals). Ordinarily I also prefer knee high sox 6 months of the year.
I want to give a shout out to ‘James’, a 2 year old with Down Syndrome for whom I provided speech therapy last year. He progressed in 6 months time from being non- communicative and lacking play skills to communicating in 2 word signs and pretending with toy people. He will be just fine, I am sure. (he had wonderful family support too ☺).
Beth T says
Linda , your story about ‘James’ has brought joy to my day. I hope he progresses.
Love the socks, Janice. Particularly, the first lot – perfect!
I shall wear colourful socks on Sunday as we complete the 2021 UK national census. This year it is online. I’m fully expecting the government website to crash as millions of people try to log on at the same time….
Annie says
Hi Linda. I don’t know where you are but I want to add another shout out to 5 year old James who has endured so many medical problems. Now thriving and well. Downs Syndrome kids and their loving families inspire us all! Hurray for our “King James”!

Check out John’s Crazy Socks. It is a sock company that is run by John who has Down’s and his father. They have all kinds of socks!
Amanda Hudson says
Janice, a big thank you for mentioning World Down syndrom Day!! My family and friends have ordered from John’s. It’s a wonderful group. Since my granddaughter Sadie was born we have become big advocates. She is an amazing 7 year old who is in first grade. Thank you to the speech therapists, physical therapists, tutors and everyone who helps these individuals meet their potential. Personally, I have mermaid socks and “Chilly Nelson” ones. Men’s socks are pretty cool too if your feet are bigger. Why do the sock makers think a size 5 shoe and a size 10 shoe are the same?
Isha says
The same people who think a short, fat woman and a tall, thin one can wear the same size tights..

In the spirit of sock day, I want to give a shout-out to Darn Tough Socks, made in Vermont. They’re wool, they’re pricey, and they’re AMAZING. Seriously, I bought each of my teenage boys a pair ($20ish each) for Christmas, and they have ASKED FOR MORE, and suggested I get some for their beloved older cousin as well. TEENAGE BOYS. They have many varieties, for running, hiking, skiing, or cozying up by the fire. Go check them out.
Cindy says
I agree! Darn Tough are worth the price.

That first lilac/blue/navy set has my heart aflutter! Confusingly, Talbots is calling these trouser socks, whereas I would call them crew socks based on the photos.
To chime in on socks preferences: in recent years, I have shied away from these awkward mid-height crew socks that always seem to be too short or too tight or too loose…it’s always something. I am very unhappy when my pant leg rises up when sitting and you can see a gap of leg between the socks and pants! And that seems unavoidable with crew socks…not just on me but on pretty much everyone. So for novelty socks, I prefer the much shorter socks that only cover the foot or come to the low ankle…or when I can find ones that fit a plus-size calf, knee high socks. For work I stick with stretchy hosiery-like thinner knee height socks. However, I still have many (too many!) crew socks that I wear to bed or wear with leggings and tall boots (so they don’t even show).
Beth T says
I agree with the annoying gap between trousers and socks. I didn’t know that they were called crew socks – I’ve learnt something. Yet, I find that long socks just fall down in wrinkles round my ankles. I don’t know which is worst. I think of very short socks as those I wore as a child.
Love the cute rabbits on your new blog, Sally.

Great accessories! I love fun socks! :)

Janice,
My son and his wife have adopted 2 Down Syndrome boys, along with a bunch of other children all with varying levels of special needs , so thank you for this observance ! The oldest one came to them with having leukemia also, but he seems to have beaten it !
DMA says
I have several pairs of really cute compression socks. They are really helpful if you are on your feet all day!
Diane Smith says
Janice, I agree with you TOTALLY on Talbots.
In fact, a good share of my wardrobe comes from those people!
Basics, gorgeous prints, fun pieces!
Thanks, as always, for your insights.
Isha Chayil says
Love these socks! Pity I can’t wear it with skirts (I never wear pants)
Sheila says
Regarding Talbots -can anyone speak to their “slimming panel”? I have always shied away from buying any of their pants/jeans/jeggings due to this description. I’m envisioning a spanx or girdle feel – yech.

Those fox socks made me want to share this video of a guy rapping the book Fox In Sox. Fun for children of all abilities and adults alike. https://youtu.be/q5wvurTU5DI

Thank you for this post Janice!! I have a precious 4 year old grandson with Down Syndrome. He is such a joy and brings our family so much happiness! We love crazy socks!
