Amen and Hallelujah!
This year, I’m going to try to be a little bit more deliberate (from time to time) about how these wardrobes come together. There were years in which I just found the 6 most fun outfits every month, and watched the wardrobes either work or struggle. So maybe being just a tiny bit more practical is an interesting change…
First up, let’s refresh our collective memories of the 6 scarves and the color palettes from them:
In choosing these first outfits, I referred back to the “Starting from Scratch” wardrobe building series that I wrote years ago. While the idea of starting with a nice pair of pants doesn’t make a lot of sense for many of us right this minute, I’m thinking of long-term wardrobe plans…
And a couple of these wardrobes are starting with dark-wash jeans, so we’re not going too overboard!
To these “core” pants, I’m adding a non-traditional twinset of a cardigan and tee shirt. Toss in a comfy pair of loafers and you’re dressed!
These 3 garments can be chosen in a few different ways; first up is a cardigan and tee in 1 neutral, and pants in the 2nd neutral:
Or you could start bold with a cardigan and tee in an accent color, with neutral pants:
A matching cardigan and pants, with a light neutral top, gives you the always-useful suit (-ish) look:
For many of us, starting with a column of a neutral color, topped with a cardigan in our 2nd neutral, is a great option:
(if you look really closely, you can see that I did some advanced photo editing on this tee shirt; I could only find HALF of the tee shirt without a bunch of distracting stuff in the background, so I built a full tee shirt from 2 halves…)
It’s worth remembering that your clothing don’t have to all match each other to a microscopic level! A gently marled cardigan is a nice option, knowing that at some point in the future you will be wanting to wear it with grey:
You can assemble garments in “suit-like” arrangement, even if the actual pieces are a soft cardigan and jeans!
Okay, I’m the first to admit that these outfits are basic, and thus not amazingly exciting. But remember the accessories from that previous, horrible year?
I’m not sure that you would wear ALL of the accessories at once, but then again, if you’re happy wearing them, DO IT!
This purple takes this outfit from ordinary to amazing…
The neutrals are a perfect backdrop for the orange, or coral, accessories. Yes, the hat isn’t a great match for some of the other accessories, but you don’t have to wear everything at once. Unless you want to…
Apricot/gold and brown feel warm and cozy…
Given the view outside my window right now (unrelieved grey…), this blue that feels like the sky would be lovely to wear…
Any favorites so far? I have to admit that my love for neutral clothes and snazzy accessories leans me toward the black and grey, or the navy, white and purple…
love,
Janice
p.s. Back in 2013, I assembled 12 outfits (1 for each month, of course!) that each included a simple black skirt. I don’t feel like it’s dated at all…
Beth T says
Happy New Year Janice and to all your readers. It can only get better!
I’m already loving your scarf selections this year. My favourite of course is the navy, grey and blended shades of purple. Next is the Mountain View wrap with soft shades of blue, green and pink. I would like to know how light the colours are in the middle. My green will be shades of teal and instead of orange shades, I see salmon pink and blush. Lastly, the blue patchwork scarf as I wear aqua, geranium and coral pinks in summer.
This year my resolutions are to:
1. ‘Shop my closet’ as far as possible.
2. Identifying real gaps but only filling them with the BEST item not something ‘just OK’.
2. Only replace something if it is damaged or worn out BUT it has to be worth replacing.
3. Crochet my own cardigans, wraps and scarves. I might even have a go at hats and gloves.
4. Sort out my jewellery and accessories to go with my new seasonal wardrobes.
I’m going to have plenty of time as I resigned from my job and I’m no longer constrained. However time should not be wasted…. A friend said to me to divide the day into hours and do a different activity throughout the day for one hour.
Alice says
My resolutions are pretty much the same, except I want to learn embroidery to fix and customize some of my clothes. I wish you all the best for your newly conquered time, may it be productive (whatever that means for you) and fulfilling!
Shrebee says
Beth T,
Congratulations upon your retirement — here’s to many happy years of using your time to do what you WANT instead of doing what you have to do !
Sally in St Paul says
Beth T, good luck with your resolutions and congratulations on your newly less-constrained schedule! I really like the advice your friend gave you. It reminds me of how some elementary school classrooms in the US (around ages 6-11) are run using “rotation stations”…students can select which “station” they want to work at but must rotate to a new one every hour (or however long). I’m going to share it with my retired parents and see how it resonates.
Sandy says
SO happy it’s not THAT year anymore. Of course it could get worse. I will accept this most excellent, cheery, timely post as a sign that it will NOT. These pieces are just the sort of things I wear, except not so much cashmere and more polartec. I have those Bean pants from the black chrysalis set, only in navy and they are excellent. Great pockets. I was uncertain on the Mountain View scarf plan. Now I see the clothes it’s my favorite. That and the blue morph of the patchwork scarf. I fear the brown chrysalis is going to be a challenge. Maybe it’s just not my colors. To Beth, congratulations on retirement!
lena says
Basic, amazingly exciting – the exact words I would use to describe these starting outfits! It’s become very apparent to me over my years of reading TVF that I am a neutrals girl. I just love living in my core neutrals and adding pops of color with accessories, so for me, this first of the 12 Months posts is a home run! And seeing all the suggestions for how to make the selections of the three pieces of clothing is super helpful.
Laura Reyes says
One of my favorite New Year’s traditions!
Sheila Harden says
Good Morning and Happy New Year! I agree with Beth T, we can only go up. My favorite is the purple ruana, since I already own it. I am, however, strongly tempted by the Mountain View scarf. I think I could work those colors in with many things I already have. I love the patchwork scarves and the colors in them. Just not for me :) Congratulations Beth T on your retirement. I had originally planned to retire this year, but after running numbers (more than once), it behooves me to work until my son is out of college – if I can make it that long (four years). This past year has exhausted me. AND, to be honest, after the last two weeks off on break, I’m not sure how well I would do with retirement. I’m better if I’m busy. Best to everyone in this new year.

But since they don’t seem to be in stock anywhere in Canada (that I can see), I’m planning to pull out some of my own scarves and remind myself firmly, “Somebody out there would probably be just as ooh-ah over this one.”
Lizette says
AND Echo won’t ship to Canada.
Sheila says
Just wondering are there any retailers who carry Echo that might ship out of USA?
Sheila says
PS, while I am extremely glad to see something more affordable (Hermes is NOT affordable for me) as a basis for the Six Scarves 12 Months wardrobes, I can understand the frustration of them not being available outside US.
Sharon says
Happy New Year to everyone!
My overall favourite is the pink and purple ruana, followed closely by the sunshine yellow and turquoise/blue patchwork scarf (Ideal for summer worn with whites or stone). However, realistically most of my clothes are blues and greys, so the mountain view scarf is probably the one I will follow, although it depends on which shades of green or orange are added throughout the year as I don’t wear either.
Katrina B says
Happy New Year! I love the Chrysalis scarf for sheer gorgeousness and bright colors, but in reality I am a Mountain View person. I wear shades of blue most of the time, and my “suit” is usually a navy cardigan and dark wash jeans.
The idea of starting with a pair of pants always seems sensible to me, since pants are what I wear 90% of the time, plus they are the hardest garment to find in the perfect combination of fit and comfort. If I start with the most difficult item, building the wardrobe gets easier after that.
Angelina Bell says
I’m going with the black and grey with a few changes. I found an inspiration scarf similar to the one you used. I am switching out the grey to ivory and the gold to green. Very excited to begin the journey. I’ve already bought my scarf and other items you did in the sneak preview. Mom chose the olive collection and is excited to start. Such fun! Thank you Janice!
Linda P says
Hello Everyone and Happy NEW Year!
To Janice: I really appreciate your overall concept of simplicity in your color combinations. It shows you can be casual and classy at the same time?.
To Beth: I like your idea of a ‘fashion resolution’ for the year. I think mine would be using the 21pc wardrobe challenge and making a point to wear the scarves I do have.
AK says
I love that Janice has taught me how to find pieces that can be dressed up or down. I’m determined to find a sweater dress in grey or navy that I can add a silk scarf or blingy jewelry and pumps for dressier. Then wear with tights, boots, denim jacket or casual necklace… well, you all know the principles by now. It’s liberating to take control of a wardrobe and know that judicious use of accessories makes you look sharp!
SF says
Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing the denim and grey combo!! Love it!
Sharon says
I am excited that THREE wardrobes include purple! And that last one includes my beloved denim blue. So I will be following all four of these wardrobes closely (but ignoring the yellow/orange/peach in all of them).
How I wish I had enough neck to wear scarves! That first one is a stunner!
BTW, I would count the ruana as a third layer, so would have chosen two tees (one light and one dark) instead of a cardigan at this point to provide more versatility while the wardrobe is still small.
Looking forward to seeing all of these wardrobes develop. Hopefully by mid-2021, we will be out and about and wearing all our lovely garments and accessories again! Stay well while we all straggle over the finish line!
S. Shaw says
YES! ‘Starting From Scratch’ using the scarves as color inspiration for the capsules makes all the sense in the world. The ‘Starting From Scratch’ formula has been so helpful for me in building my own wardrobe. I will enjoy watching it play out in this year’s 6 scarves series.
Cindy says
I am totally drawn by the mountain view scarf and everything chosen to wear with it so far. I own ONE scarf! I purchased it in Germany and the colors are very similar to the mountain view. However, I am tempted to also purchase this scarf as it might be warmer due to containing wool. On the other hand, I am concerned about the wool being itchy. Anyone have insights on scarves containing wool?
Sharon says
Cindy, I hadn’t realised it was a wool/modal blend, but on closer inspection the yarn looks very fine so probably merino or cashmere. I have a couple of pure cashmere scarves and they do not make me itch. For me, the wool that makes me itch the most is mohair followed closely by Shetland wool.
Barb says
If wool is itchy, sometimes, washing it with a bit of hair conditioner will soften it. I’ve done this with hand knits and it seems to work. I think the wool in a scarf like that will not be itchy though as it’s so fine and mixed with other softer fibers.
Cindy says
Thank you for the insight Barb and Sharon. It is much appreciated!
Alice says
It’s snowing outside, I’m sipping a warm cup of tea and reading The Vivienne Files… the new year is looking good :)
I really liked the basic version of the outfits as they were, but with the accessories they do become amazing!
The brown-based outfit looks would be most at home in my closet, but they’re all so beautiful I can’t really pick a favorite.
Sara K says
Happy New Year to you all!
Janice, I don’t think I have ever seen an outfit here and thought of it as “dated”. Your choices are timeless -and if an older item feels and looks great, why not keep on wearing it even if some other people stop wearing similar items? That’s sustainable…
*said by someone who likes many of her clothes that are 10 years or older…*
My fashion resolution for this year is to shop as few clothes as possible because my wardrobe is in great shape and my money is needed elsewhere. Instead, I plan to have a theme for each of my monthly capsules. In addition to being fun, I hope that I end up wearing some neglected items. I don’t think I’m going to actually need 22 items in January, but my capsule sure looks pretty and exciting. Since I’m getting a bit sick of wearing practical and easy things all the time, I decided to start my year with a healthy dose of silk, cashmere and pretty details…besides, these days getting out of the house is pretty special :D
Linda T says
I love your choices this year,! I’m torn between the ruana and the mountain view, both are right up my alley. Really looking forward to the evolution of these wardrobes.
A very happy New year Janice. Here’s to a healthy, happy 2021.
Eleanor says
A very happy New Year! Phew! Enjoying all these scarves/ outfits. Even where I will never, ever wear them (orange is not for me), I appreciate the explanations of how you are choosing the garments and enjoying the lovely colours. I was all set to purchase that purple Ruana (slightly trepidatiously as I am…vertically challenged) but they don’t ship to Canada….oh well, I have a lovely dark purple long cardigan that I will wear instead.
Renee says
The last 2 resonate with me most. But the teal/yellow combo is delicious!
Shrebee says
Janice,
As I sit here viewing this post, I feel a sense of delight in your future posts with the “ Starting From Scratch” methodology ! While not all of these scarves suit my own coloring, I am still loving all of the color combinations — they all bring me such joy to see !
Wishing you and all of your readers here a very Blessed, HEALTHY, and Happy 2021 !
Sally in St Paul says
Happy New Year, everyone! Of course I gravitate to the two wardrobes with blue denim. The Mountain View is a no-brainer for its lovely white and marled denim-y blue with those socks and those loafers together…love it! The Blue Patchwork scarf has been calling my name for months now, so I am not surprised to like an outfit featuring it, but I am a bit surprised by how much I like the butter yellow twin set. I added a light yellow summery twin set (knit tank and 3/4 sleeve cardigan) and a pair of ankle pants this past year…the “chamois dust” colorway from Christopher & Banks, purchased at 3 different times over a few months as I realized how much I like wearing the color. The pants were a bit of a shock since I typically veer away from light colored pants, but I took a chance on them for under $8 and they turned out to be terrific. I guess I have fallen in love with light, not-to-bright yellow.
Like Beth T, I have some resolutions this year, which I am calling “The Evaluation Year”:
1: Evaluate every item as I wear it and take notes in my wardrobe spreadsheet. I am rating 4 aspects on a scale of 1-5…color (how it looks ON ME), style (for my aesthetics and shape), comfort (how does it feel to wear), and fit (how does it look). I also have a general Notes column where I can get very specific (e.g., today’s medium wash trouser jeans notes include “full length vertical streaks of variegation in the denim color are pleasing and flattering” and “good casual to Friday casual option with a pointy-toed flat”). Then I make a preliminary evaluation on a column called “Initial Reaction,” where I make a recommendation to myself…it’s based on considering the item in isolation, not as part of a wardrobe, which is how a final decision will eventually be made. Today I have 4 clear “Keep” reactions and 1 “Keep but re-evaluate” reaction (for a pink elephant print scarf that is cute but possibly brighter than would be ideal next to my face). This seems like so much when I write it out! But it only took me a few minutes to make the notes in my spreadsheet.
2: Photograph every outfit, head to toe; then using a combination of the photographs and the view in the mirror(s), evaluate and take notes in my outfit list Word document. I put in bullets under Plus (e.g., “scarf and Keds both have patterns that are somewhat bold but with variegation within the colored areas”) and Minus (e.g., “scarf’s pink is significantly brighter and cooler than the sweater’s pale blush…would not wear together again”). Then I make an assessment for Rewear…today’s is “Yes with tweaks” and with the tweaks listed. This took another few minutes.
I am also following along with the 6 Scarves project, only instead of a “build a wardrobe from scratch” approach, I am going to “build a wardrobe from my closet.” No, that’s not strictly true…I am going to build SIX wardrobes from my closet, using 6 scarves that I own that are as close to the spirit of Janice’s picks as I can get while also supporting palettes that are possible in my YES WAY TOO LARGE closet.
Perhaps I need to start a blog of my own to document this craziness ;)
AK says
Sally..that would be fun to read if you blogged that. Some of us have the same challenges. At the very least, let us know how it’s going. It’s fun to have this community of women who love beautiful clothes without breaking the bank! We all seem to lean towards the practical, but elegant/classy/sporty! Happy New Year to all! (Be sure to let your friends know about Janice!)

‘First impressions count’ but also ‘pay attention to detail’. This morning I had the first impression of the obvious three scarves that I liked.
Tonight after reading all your comments and looking again, I realise that pink, purple and grey all feature in the two wardrobes with the Chrysalis scarf ?♀️. I had initially discounted them for the brown and black backgrounds that I would never put close to my face, even though I love butterflies and flowers.
BUT I don’t need to put these scarves near my face, I just need to use them as a guide to building a wardrobe with black or brown which I would wear as bottoms.
I reluctantly habe a couple of pairs of black trousers (though black is not one of my colours) and I recently found a pair of cocoa brown cords in a closing down sale ? of one of the few UK brands that does trousers in 27″ length and are roomy in the hip and thigh area. The company is going into liquidation….
So although the colours of the flowers and butterflies are a bit bright for me, I’m keen to see how the Chrysalis wardrobes pan out.
Goodness that’s FIVE wardrobes to follow…. several people were going to use similar scarves that they have which is an excellent idea. Certainly my own floral/butterfly scarves are more delicately coloured.
Julie says
Yikes – the navy J Crew Ponte pants in two of these are already sold out in my size ?. Be quick if yiu want them!
Beth T says
Janice, I enjoy re-reading your blog and the comments on the days in between. I begin to make mental notes of particular features, though writing it down in Sally’s phenomenal spreadsheet would be a better idea!
Just from the comments, the Mountain View scarf is the most popular with 10 votes. Followed by the Patchwork Blue and Chrysalis Brown with four each. Perhaps we are all yearning for outdoor spaces – roaming the hills or visiting gardens….
Certainly beauty in nature features in all these scarves. Even the plaid ruana is reminiscent of heather on the moors.
Creativity – Janice we thank you in spades for your inspirational creativity throughout the year. But in our own way, we each take your ideas and apply them to our own wardrobes. I have become a lot more creative in putting outfits together, experimenting with orphans and learning what suits me best. It is an evolving and creative process.
I am evaluating as I go along and have made some surprising discoveries about my instinctive choices and my favourites. This involves paying close attention to colour, tone, fabrics and little details that elevate an item or outfit from commonplace to wow. Just looking at the first choices for these wardrobes. The clothes are good but for me it’s about colour, pattern and texture. Add in the accessories and the clothes are elevated.
I like the idea of following Starting from Scratch as another theme this year. I found the Weekly Timeless Wardrobe very useful in that regard.
This year, I will sort out my jewellery, shoes and bags to create seasonal accessory capsules to go with the clothes. I am experimenting with my orphan or least worn pieces finding the necklines or clothes they look best with and that blingy jewellery can be worn with casual outfits. I’d love to find a pair of silver lace-ups or ballet flats for summer.
I haven’t worn many of my scarves this season because we have been indoors most of the time. I shall choose six scarves that closely resemble Janice’s choices and try to create my own wardrobes around them.
Beth T says
Thank you for encouraging me as
I consider whether my new found status without a job, for the first time in my adult life.
Lockdown and struggles trying to do my job from home made me realise that those few hours ‘working’ part-time were unfulfilling. I was very unhappy and had been for about five years but was too scared about what would happen if I stopped working when my kids were still going through education. Technically I have another 10 years before I’m eligible for the UK state pension.
Having the courage to call it a day without another job to go to was risky but it was doable. My family were supportive and relieved when I did. Several of my friends and relatives have done the same as well.
Even if I am semi-retired I will be active. My parents and in-laws were more active in clubs and the local community in their twenty odd years of retirement than they ever were whilst working.
So for the first time in my life, I’m not in a rush to fill up my days but I’m going to take things slowly and see what opportunities open up related to my hobbies and interests, be it creative or intellectual, paid or unpaid.
2021 is my year for self-discovery and knowing that I have a great wardrobe gives me extra confidence!
Sandy says
Again, good luck to you. It takes a lot to step out of unhappy but safe into the unknown. You sound like you are excited and positive! So I think THAT year which we do not name, the Voldemort of years, has not been without some good things coming out of it. I hope you do well.
Kim says
I really like all of these scarves and wardrobes and can’t wait to follow along with how they progress this year. My absolute favorite is the purple/navy ruana wardrobe, followed closely by the Mountain View denim/grey wardrobe. My own wardrobe is primarily denim, purples, greens and navy. I’m glad you decided to use the Starting From Scratch method of building them. I hope you have a happy and healthy 2021, Janice!
Cindy Clark says
Janice – Do you know how the quality of the butterfly Echo scarves compare with the Hermès or Aspinal scarves in terms of weight, sheen and weave? My experience with Echo scarves is that they are lighter weight and more satiny than the others. However the price point for those Echo scarves were in the $40.00-$50.00 range. I noticed the butterfly scarves are $125.00 and so might be a heavier weight. Thanks.
NATALIE says
I love several of these scarves but my favorite wardrobe you have started is with yellow, turquoise and blue jeans. I would replace these with a blue jean skirt. I NEVER dress this casually but I’m trying to in retirement. This doesn’t come naturally. Looking forward to your post this year. Happy New year!

Janice, I want to order the Echo scarf ‘Mountain View’ but it appears the company does not deliver to Canada. Any suggestions??? I live north of Edmonton, Alberta in a rural area.
Laurie says
I am so excited for these new scarves and outfits. I really enjoy watching you build the wardrobes each month. I’m in love with both the purple ruana and the black butterfly scarf, and I am seriously tempted to buy the ruana while it is on sale. The scarf is, sadly, beyond my means, but I will be following that wardrobe eagerly.
Michelle says
For us Canadians loving the Echo mountain scarf, I did find a muted blue/grey scarf from Laura, although it is polyester and not of the same quality. It has a bit of coral and green in it as well. Both Simons and The Bay carry Echo scarves, but not this one I’m afraid.
Looking forward to following along.

I love seeing the series start, and you are brave to include one example of so many different ways to build a wardrobe! Also, just a heads up that partway down on the accessories part of your post, the descriptive into ended up below rather than above the corresponding image. – nancyo

I’m a bit late catching up on my reading, but I wanted to say that I am really pleased to see how you approached the wardrobes this year. I very much appreciate that you chose scarves from Echo since they are at a much better price point for many of us. Selecting the color palettes based on the most common reader requests and then using the Starting from Scratch methodology to start off the series makes so much sense to me. But, I cannot tell you how much it means that you demonstrated several different ways of building these outfits. It’s extremely helpful given that we all have different preferences. Some of us like more color while others prefer more neutrals. Some like dressing in columns of color while others don’t, and so on. And while I think all of the scarves are beautiful in their own right, for me personally, the blue patchwork scarf wardrobe has clearly emerged as my favorite. The navy and camel/beige neutrals are easy to find and work well for me and the accents of turquoise/aqua, yellow, and coral/peach are all colors that suit my Spring coloring. By choosing dark wash jeans and a yellow twinset, then topping it off with fun accessories in one of the other accents, I can absolutely see myself wearing those clothes in my everyday life.
Wendy Rochael says
I’m so excited I was able to purchase the scarf that goes with the khaki, tan, orange, coral and yellow group! I’m want to purge a whole lot of clothes so I’m going to have this cluster and one that has a black neutral. I looking forward to having room for all my clothes in my closet.
Teija says
I love the golden capsule. That’s my favorite mix. I love it when you make stories to go along with the capsules. So fun. As for myself, I am so bored with my same old home outfits. I had just made a Spring / Summer capsule last year when my job was Covided. It’s still hanging there unworn. I want to get in to my closet and introduce myself to my things. Fall in love and wear them anyway.
No Fear of Fashion says
I am not a more is more fan, but I do like attention drawing items. I like them even so much that I have ended up with a lot of pieces which cannot be combined as they compete for attention. It is the same with jewellery. I acknowledge that being decorated like a Christmas tree isn’t chic. Yet I cannot stop myself from wearing a watch, a ring on each hand, a bracelet and earrings. OK and often I throw in a brooch or a necklace too. If I do that, I hold back on the earrings. When I write this down I think: gosh… that is a bit much… haha.

I really like the navy, amethyst, white and grey capsule. So I am going to go shopping in my closet for the jacket, pants, tee and shoes. Then check my jewellery to see what I have in purple. Then I am going to make the hat and crochet a Ruana in navy, amethyst, white and gray. Looking forward to seeing what February 2021 has for this capsule.

Surprisingly, it’s a three way tie for me so far. The blue cardigan is really catching my eye, and the grey and black is very familiar to me, as well as pleasing to look at, but the olive and beige is sneaking in there to look enticing. I don’t usually go for those colours, so I’ll have to see if it still holds appeal when more things get added, but for now, those three are the top ones. Thanks for all the lovely choices!
