Such calming colors….
It’s not a complicated color palette, but it’s certainly beautiful!
She’s Ready to Dress Up…
Now that she’s free to travel again, she does NOT want to pack jeans, nor sweatpants, nor a sweatshirt. Frankly, if she doesn’t see her casual clothes for a LONG time, she won’t mind!
They’re going to take the train into the city, and stay in a hotel near the harbor. She wants to be able to see the sea from their room; it’s been too long.
They’ve had months to plan this trip, and dream about it. Leisurely walks, holding hands. Lovely, lingering dinners. Sitting in a café by the sea, watching the waves and sipping a cocktail.
Nothing strenuous – they don’t have a check-list of things that they want to do. Mostly just enjoy the sea, and each other, and fresh air, and a change of scenery from their own home and own neighborhood!
What is your current travel dream? Mine is – I know you’re shocked – Ireland. I want to sit in a pub, drink an Orchard Thieves cider, and listen to the chat…
love,
Janice
p.s. Back in November of 2015, I did a few posts based around a Monet train; the colors are very much the same as this wardrobe!

This is lovely and inspires me to lose the burgundy in my wardrobe and turn to that soft lilac in the painting. To be honest with myself the burgundy is too dark for me but I have resisted changing it because I like the idea of it. In fact I resist soft colours because I am a bit of a peacock and I love the drama of black/white with clear blues rather than soft colours but I have already embraced blush and ivory so I am getting there slowly.

My hair is streaked with white. I now wear my darker colours as bottoms. If I do where a dark top, it tends to be a cardigan, jumper or jacket with a lighter top underneath or a lighter scarf.

Beth T,
While I still have my roots colored in a sandy brown color, my skin has gotten lighter as I have aged, and so like you, if I wear a dark color near my face, I have to use a lighter color under my chin as a bottom layer, along with a softly colored scarf .

What a gorgeous palette. As my hair is mostly gray now, I’m trying to figure out if I need to change my colors. Like the above reader, I’m trying to figure out if I need softer colors, cooler colors, whatever….These blues are just beautiful.
Beth T says
I love the colours in this post and the Monet painting – it’s very tempting to put them together and create quite a versatile wardrobe.
I’m looking forward to visiting the Yorkshire Dales again. Rolling hills, hillside streams, waterfalls, limestone crags, dry stone walls and loads of sheep. Finish the day with a hearty meal and Theakstons beer sitting by a log fire in a village pub. Bliss!
I have a question though:
Please would you define what a ‘Six Pack’ is? I noticed this tag for this post and the one for yesterday. I’ve looked at the Six Pack archives but can’t work it out as each post seems to have nine items plus accessories?
Thanks
Barbara says
Hi Beth,
I think it is 6 items to pack plus an outfit to wear in travel.
Beth T says
Thanks – obvious now! I probably do that without even thinking about it.

Returning to Ireland is always at the top of my travel list. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get an Orchard Thieves cider here in the states?!
Janice says
It would be nice, except right now I think I might end up drinking FAR too many….
hugs,
Janice

Thank you for posting these lovely treats. It’s such a beautiful start to my day, a quiet 20 minutes with coffee and you all. Helps remind me that we all have a part to play in this strange world we’re in right now. xoxo

Janice,
I love how you have selected a sliding scale of hues ranging from aqua through to teal and then added the touch of what the merchant describes as chambray blue, but appears to be a pale periwinkle on my monitor . I don’t wear black, nor gray, so might these accents also work with navy ? If it were Summer, I would use stone as my second neutral .
I need to curate my excessive amount of Summer tops and toppers, and shall probably keep the blue-greens as the predominant accent colors , with the peaches and sages in secondary amounts .
Janice says
These colors are lovely with navy – guaranteed!
I need to whittle down my summer tops too; I think that it’s normal to end up with a ton of tee shirts and “little” tops for warmer weather. They wear out quickly, and start to look pretty wimpy and limp…
I’m going to cut some of my tee shirts down to “Swiffer” size and start using fabric that I can launder to clean my floors, rather than yet another “disposable” thing that will live longer than I will.
hugs,
Janice

Brilliant idea for older cotton knits! I have used my white cotton terry facecloths when they get greyish in the swiffer mop. But I have tossed my dhs undershirts and my T-shirts without thinking. I won’t anymore!
Love this soft grey based wardrobe capsule. Like others, as I have aged I need the softer neutrals and softer accent colours.

I’m going to cut down a couple of old towels to use too. My building has tremendous air pressure that blows in under the door of our apartment, and so we accumulate dust on an almost hourly basis. I could stand by the door with a vacuum and clean all day…
Blocking the draft doesn’t work though, because then we can’t get any fresh air in our windows (no cross-breeze in a condo that only faces east and south!).
Nothing that keeps me awake at night though…
hugs,
Janice

When my t-shirts get beyond public show, but still decent, I relegate them to wear with pyjama bottoms. Alternatively, cut up, they make great dusters for ornaments and for buffing polished wood. Recycling at it’s best!

The loveliest of colours.
Leesa says
Janice, I just want to hug you! Now that I’ve gone grey, I have searched for the colors I love but confused how to put it together. People always say they love me in the bright “winter” palate colors but its too bold and saturated – I prefer this exact mix! AND you put it with black -yea! I know I could expand this with Grey and I’m good to go. Thank you for the “permission” to love what I love and feel best in! I always appreciate all the hard work you put into your combinations and enjoy all of them tremendously! Thank you, Leesa

These posts – looking forward to a time when we might travel and move again – are a balm to my soul. Thank you!

Returning to Ireland is always at the top of my list as well! We were supposed to be in Scotland in July but will have to wait until next year. Son was supposed to study abroad in Italy-NOPE. We are grateful to have our health and hope the suffering of others will end soon.
Just wanted to thank you, Janice, for changing my opinion of Helen Frankenthaler’s work by way of your recent posts. While I love the outfits you create with Helen’s palette, I have often thought “Well I could paint that!” Now, my son with the Fine Arts degree responds with “But you didn’t!” I am humbled by all artists’ talents and will be kinder to Helen. Enjoy your blog immensely and it is a bright spot in my day!

Add in grey and this is my color palette. With the stay-at-home order, I have finally gotten control of my laundry and man, do I have way too many clothes. With this post that so closely matches my colors, I finally feel good about downsizing again to a normal sized capsule wardrobe. I can certainly see now how I can put what I have together in different ways to get better use of what I will have left.
Thank you for this timely color palatte!

Love this colorway. I would add a soft white or light cream (top?) To reflect the sea foam..everything about this is tre perfect!!!

Lovely! One of my favorites of all your capsule wardrobes. A excellent example of how one can dress to be chic and comfortable in an urban environment.
Robyn says
How I would love this! Pretty colours, pretty clothes. Now I am have cool grey hair, this is my colour range, with an occasional sage green (eye colour) or whit accent too. (Can a person ever have too many white shirts?). My travel dream for now is to the coast or beside a river … The colours suggest a restful watery holiday enjoying nature. Dressing up, perhaps, for dinner at a local restaurant specialising in local produce. Mmmm … dreaming of a soft blue cheese …

This painting is perfect for me! What a lovely wardrobe for city travel.
My husband was listening to some Celtic music on YouTube and the accompanying images of Scotland brought tears to my eyes and a longing to return. It’s been nearly 14 years – far too long for a place I have loved visiting. – nancyo

Oh my, teal/sea tones and greys form the backbone of my wardrobe so I am so excited to see this one. I am lucky, about a quarter of the landscape part of our view is a tidal estuary~ ever changing and so soothing. For me, it would be to take the postponed trip to our capital city, Wellington culture, shopping, and family. Even hope to get to a Hurricanes Rugby Game as a belated birthday present from my son.
Keep finding reasons to smile and stay safe.
