I try to remember my primary goals in life – mostly travel – but sometimes I lose sight of that and am inclined to buy something that won’t get me closer to my goals. So I built myself this little collage, printed it out in a small size, and wrapped it around the credit cards in my wallet. So it’s not that I can’t shop, but if I DO shop, I have to look at these images before I can use my credit or debit card…
Your choice of photographs will unquestionably be different, but having to look an eclair in the eyes is a useful focusing technique for me!

That is brilliant! Although my dilemma is "hmmm… how many miles can I get for this?" LOL!!!

Brilliant! I have a tin bank that's a miniature English postal pillar box (came with English toffee years and years ago). I put all of my loose change plus all wrinkled and worn currency (generally $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills) in the bank every day. When the bank gets full I put the money in a special savings account for airfare to London. It generally takes a few years to accumulate enough cash for a ticket this way, but it is a painless way to save for a very important goal.

I too am slowing myself down, way down this year. Still two kids in college, just finished a major home remodel and I really DO NOT NEED anything right now.

I love this. In so many ways, every choice we make throughout our days comes down to what is really important to us. Are we crashing about thoughtlessly grabbing whatever sparkles in the now, or are we carefully selecting the things that build a quality life, mentally and physically.

Hahaha, I'm totally doing this!

I love your site for its impact on my closet, but this idea is probably the most helpful ever! Thanks!

Wonderful idea, having to unwrap the credit card to use it will prompt a lot of second thoughts.

great idea.
I also write a note re: my "shiny sparkly thing" on my calendar, 3 months from now. Odds are, I will have forgotten about most things… (Although, note to self: those winter boots with strap-on ice cleats? Yes, you do need to get those….)

Try Yaktrax–snap on any boot and cost around $20. Saved my life while walking the dog!

Thank you. While I love all your posts this really resonates with me at the moment. I need to stop and look at what I really want and for me that is also travel. Maryann

Delightful! Or you could just wrap a 5-euro note around your cards ;)

Love, love,……LOVE this idea!! What great fun. Sometimes I just get so sidetracked.

Great idea. Will alter it a little by placing a photo of my son and his fiance and the date of their wedding on the cards.

Genius. I am saving for Ireland some time in the near future and that will help me too!

Such an excellent clever frugal idea! It's so easy to get tempted and distracted while we are out and about.

God willing, we are going to do Provence next year. I'm totally doing going to make a picture collage to remind myself of the goal. We just got back from Belgium, so last fall I kept reminding myself not to buy anything that would hinder our trip! It worked!
