Stephen Lewis, the Canadian politician and diplomat whose foundation is focused on fighting HIV-AIDS in Africa, said an interesting thing: that some world leaders resented Mandela because he was such an exemplar of compassion and reason. They preferred to rule by fear and violence, and Mandela, with his world-statesman reputation, made things harder for them. Now, he wondered, who can take his place?
